the info on the mining drones says they have a storage capacity of 1200m3 but when i tell them to mine they only bring back the amount mined by a single mining cycle. why?

They always mine one 60 second cycle and return.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1,200m3 capacity in their attributes is irrelevant. To get the drones to mine "forever," or until cargohold is full, select the option to "Mine Repeatedly."  |

What Time means is that 'Mine Repeatedly' will make the mining drone(s) mine the selected rock until it is gone, or they are told to do something else.
My experience has been that T1 mining drones will bring back somewhere around 15 m3 per trip depending on skills. I have no idea what the cargohold is for.
A Retriever with Mining Drones (not a good idea) will get about an 11% increase in yield from them.
Are they worth it? I don't know, but mine are certainly entertaining.

Mining Drones have that stupid-high capacity just so nobody can ever possibly run out of space on them.
The drones will mine for 60 seconds and return. If told to 'Mine Repeatedly' they will go back to their rock after dropping off each load.
The Mining Drones skill, as well as the inherent bonuses on some ships will increase the potential yield per cycle. (Vexor, Myrmidon, Dominix, Arbitrator) T2 Mining Drones have a higher base yield, making for some decent additional ore.
NOTE: Rats can and will attack drones. Mining drones are not exempt from this. Watch over them.

I don't know the answer on capacity, but I do know that they mine the same amount every time and that parking almost on top of the asteroid improves your yield. Parking further away reduces your yield. Just give yourself a little manouvring room, but not too much.
The reason is travel time. If they only travel a short distance, they spend more time mining and less travelling.
