ok so you on your way to jita to buy your wares but worried about the lag ganks? well worry no more follow these steps to ensure a lag free visit to jita.
1, Once you arrive at the Jita gate in the next systems, zoom your camera out fully. so your ship becomes a tiny dot. 2, Jump into jita and ensure you never zoom into your ship.
Thats it, no-one can gank me on gates or on the lag infested undock, its all smooth and immiediate.
Let me know what u think.

cool story, bro. However that only solves (some) client side lag, any server side lag will still affect you.

if everyone does this it will result in less data for the eve servers and clients to process, well thats my theory anyway.

no it won't! the server still sends you all the data, the client just doesn't bother rendering the ships around you because you can't see them all zoomed out anyway. same amount of data and processing on the server side.

I could be wrong.
zoomed out ship = 1 nanopixel
zoomed in ship = massive 3D image
i think it depends on what the server tells the clients to draw, its possible that the zoomed in image of the ship would require the eve server to do more processing than the zoomed out image.
by everyone zooming out this decreases the processing for the server having to send the client complex graphical instructions.
As I say, when i zoom out on my client everything in jita is smooth.

Edited by: Breaker77 on 16/08/2010 02:12:12 Zooming in and out is handled by the client not the server. Just like changing the video resolution your client runs in has no effect on the server.

If you notice in your eve directory there are all these resDX9blahblahblah.stuff graphic files. Graphics are rendered client side, based on the client.

Confirmed. I play this way in every system now, especially when mining. My strip miners are 5% more efficient, too. They must have been affected by lag from the overview.

This actualy works quite well and is my default ui setting for trade runs or mining ops. But don't do it if you are in a position to get wardecced or are a prime suicide target.

What OP said is working for the slower computers as it eliminates client side rendering "lag" (wrong word, but still). Some more tricks:
- remove all brackets (click on the white triangle in upper left corner of the overview window and choose "Hide all brackets" option) - minimize local; - minimize overview;
When you do all that and zoom out, what's left is a 95% pure server side lag. Enjoy

You don't play EVE for long, ey?
To the OP: you're mixing up client-side performance issues (due to crappy computer) with server-side issues (due to crappy infrastructure and bad game design on CCPs end).
Of course it's a good idea to optimize your EVE-client settings (anyone who isn't a total noob has done this long ago) but that won't help you one bit in fleet lag / gridload situations. My FPS are fine, my ping is fine but the server simply takes too long to co-ordinate all the things that are happening on the grid. ___________________ "It was mentioned by CCP that the data does not seem to support that polished quality sells better than new features."

WTS: Clue in how game engines work
the client still renders the ships even if you're fully zoomed out, the geometry is still there, it might not be as detailed, but its still there.
so are the bounding boxes, i dont know if you have noticedm, but people can still bump you if you've zoomed out.
the first is client side, the other is server side, and none of them are affected by you zooming out. so, what was your point again?

To make other people receive mails about them losing the ships they never see either. Then when they finally do zoom in they can go "omg I was ganked by a player that is way better then me and has more success with women in RL". At least that's why I play EVE. ___________________ "It was mentioned by CCP that the data does not seem to support that polished quality sells better than new features."

That isn't how it works at all.
Your solution is only good for client side lag, which you wouldn't even be getting if you had a computer built in the last decade. It affects nobody else and everybody doing it would have absolutely zero effect on the game

Only works for people with sucky computers in the first place.
Take it from someone with intricate knowledge of server<->client software design, and no I won't explain it to you; it takes a week or two of actual studying. (Or year or two, depending on brainstuff) all stuff drawn on your screen has next to nothing to do with the server. The server only keeps data of what objects are on grid, which direaction they are facing, their velocity and (de)acceleration of the object. Usually this data is sent as a hashed bitfield, or bit array of said fields to the client, and decrypted, entered into the physics and 3D engine for calcu... oh wait, we're already client side; and I wasn't supposed to explain it :P
Besides, I'm not a teacher, so I'd be crap at it.
Enjoy! ;)

Ok, I can accept eve works in a similar fashion to Microsofts Terminal Services where a remote user is simply viewing a session on another system. All processing is done serverside and clients are sent information relating to whats drawn onscreen.
My solution will only help those clients that take ages to render hundreds of ships.
