Following up on this thread, if anyone who takes possession (illegally) of a password protected container can get the password vial eve-mail, then what is the point/value of these containers?

1. Why did this need a new thread? 2. Too keep away people who can't take possession of the container, obviously. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

For protecting them while they're anchored in space.

They're also used in corp hangars

I'm talking about the audit log secure containers. They are not anchor-able.

But if they cant take possession, then why bother having it password protected?
Look, if I ship cargo in one of these and I get popped and the container drops, whoever picks it up can get the password...right?

Because they may still have access to it (eg. in corp hangars).

Whomever picks it up doesn't need the password. Just wait 3 weeks and nuke it from orbità
àassuming it's the contents they're after, of course. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

OK..thanks for clearing that up.
Seems there really is no secure way of shipping things.

Except in Orcas. Especially in the unscannable, un-make-stuff-drop-when-ship-pops-able corporate hangers :)
Orca's are like giant, floundering, semi-defenceless smuggling machines! |

We need a smaller version of the orca for smuggling.

Seeing as how they can get into warp faster than some indies and transports, and how they sport more tank than most battleships, I'm not entirely sure I buy either of the "floundering" and "semi-defenceless" labelsà
àthey are fairly giant, though. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I can see you've never lost an orca to a war dec (insert generic "what kind of idiot flies one during a war?" comment, but that's not the point!) but you're right, I guess you can consider their massive tank as their "defence", even if a couple medium drones are all it can fire with.
And I don't know about you, but my orca takes a bloody year and a half to align...stupid cargo mods... |

If you're worried about quick alignment then yes, cargo mods are kinda stupid.

Mine takes 10 seconds. And yes, cargo mods on an Orca is pretty stupid since you don't need them (and using the cargo hold would negate the entire purpose of using it for secure transports). ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Agreed, if you buy one for smuggling, cargo-tanking it is a dumb idea. But those large cargohold optimization rigs cost around 20 million a piece; I'm not keen on swapping them in and out every day
Cargo mods do make sense if you use the orca as a mining support ship. With a couple hulks, you'd be surprised how fast it can fill up.
(This thread is apparently now about hiding things inside big blue space whales)

Edited by: Agent Known on 19/08/2010 20:59:05 They're used a lot in corp hangers because you can "restrict" who has access by using container roles. The audit log tells you who took what, and a password prevents people from unlocking valuable goods (like T2 modules or unsorted loot, for example).
Edit: To detail on the password mechanic, you can make the container require a password for viewing, unlock/lock, or viewing the log. By setting a password to "unlock" and forcing all new content to be locked, you create a drop-box of sorts without needing a give-only hanger. On another note, I also have an annoying sig. |
