It occurred to me recently that I have much in common with my various foes in this game. Any time the wheels of diplomacy turn and my group finds itself aligned with previous 'reds' against a new and even more nefariously ghey threat I find I have a lot in common with my previously sworn enemies. They are just broskis having a few brewskis and shooting someā well, ****ski I supposeā..... on vent etc.
THEY are just the same as ME.
Why do we as human beings and as the physical manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christs boundless love need to HATE someone else so badly. And why does mindlessly and reasonlessly hating the **** muncher on the other end of my pew pew sticks make internet spaceships so much better?
Why?

Stricktly out of motivastional purposes, I suppose. It's like Caneing the missus but than without the proper motivational emotion...it would end up feeling like work.

Hello Re Mmacs, I hope you are well? I don't particularly hate anyone but I understand the importance of hates right to manifest itself in all forms. To show my understanding of such things I allow waves of unimaginable hatred to surge forth through big mean words and acts, content in the knowledge that it is just natures way and the karmic effect of a balanced emotional diet is what everybody needs.

This is true.
*puffs on pipe*
Also, OP, hatred stems forth from the need to preserve oneself and one's group, a strong behavioral mechanic empowering us to shut down our empathy and common sense to bash other people's skulls in without thinking twice. This has been very much needed for survival in times when resources were scarce and to make sure that YOUR particular genes will live on after you die.
It is a tool granted to us by millions of years of evolution. Being able to be violent has been a necessity for 99.99999% of the ride so far and since evolution is happening so slow in complex species this still compels us very much. Hundreds of thousands of books, movies and games with violent themes intended for consumer entertainment are evidence of this. (Not to mention real wars or violent acts being committed in every country and every day). Essentially we, as a species suddenly found ourselves in a new day and age of an advanced, peaceful society while we are still instilled with the behavioral tools of a caveman.
Aliens would probably deem us 'pathetic'.

I fail to see why. We're the only species on the planet that has created a concept of an ideal greater than what we are now and spent the last few thousand years working towards achieving it. Our societies and cultures have taken slow but measurable strides in what is considered appropriate behavior to instill in future generations. I think that's telling.

You need to go back and read recorded history of civilizations four thousand years ago. The stuff we do today is kindergarten crap compared to the genocides habitually carried out back then.

Man, WW2 happened only 65 years ago.. 62 to 78 million dead.. Thousands of years ago that would probably total close to the whole population of the planet.. Wait for the next big one, then talk.. What progress please? Signature locked for inappropriate content. Zymurgist |

Tbh unless FOX News has wall to wall coverage of it with a Panel of unbiased experts offering me intelligent comment i refuse to believe any of these 'atrocities' (with the obviosu exception of 9-11) ever actually occurred and are probably a left wing conspiracy.
Most likely started by the Devi.... I mean Obama himself.

The progress that the atrocity was universally decried and banded together against. Couple thousand years ago, it was simply the run of the mill. People were actually surprised when King Cyrus didn't eradicate the entire royal families of the countries he invaded.
The progress I'm pointing to is not that it never happens anymore; we're not there yet. It's that fewer and fewer countries have cultures that see this as status quo, and those that do are decried by the majority of the global community. Even in a single culture in a single century you can measure progress, as when a hundred years ago African Americans were barely seen as human. You can't tell me there hasn't been progress in ethics and social consciousness.

Don't use words if you don't know what they mean. Also, since we're the only sentient species on the planet, we're ipso facto the only species capable of doing what you were trying to say there in your special abstruse and roundabout way.
Originally by: Nathan Jameson You need to go back and read recorded history of civilizations four thousand years ago. The stuff we do today is kindergarten crap compared to the genocides habitually carried out back then.
Also quite fallacious and misleading. I suggest you acquaint yourself with contemporary history, the human condition and basic worldliness.

Fully agreed, the question is why don't we. My take on things is that we don't because the way doesn't lie on the path of the least resistance.. We would have to put more effort in than we are willing to invest.
How about the population explosion? That too would be too difficult to control. Perhaps high body count is a blessing in disguise, ever so needed for the long term survival of our species? Signature locked for inappropriate content. Zymurgist |

I assume that, as you say, as a race we'd need to deviate from the path of least resistance per se. From personal experience most people I know are at their core lazy, selfish and greedy. -------- Ķ |

*puffs pipe some more*
Hmm, yes ... I subscribe to a slight alternative of the same view. It's not so much the path of the least resistance but a question of apparent necessity. We are able to move mountains but only when it is REALLY OBVIOUS that it is necessary. (To name just one example, the Dutch Delta plan springs to mind which was only designed and executed after a major flood).
Next to that there is a general shortsightedness due to generation based ego-centrism; we are hardly able to act to problems with negative consequences lying beyond our own lifespans.
A threat like a big asteroid with our name on it is very apparent however, even if the impact would only occur in a hundred years, we would probably be willing enough to do something about it now in order to nudge it out of it's course and be really ****ing proud about it. But diffuse problems stemming forth from our own nature, such as over-population will be much, much harder to tackle. To avoid making a living hell hole out of this world we would have to take measures which go against our evolutionary burden of instincts and morals. Birth control, mandatory sterilization, being as responsible as possible with natural resources etc., either that or more violence and a higher vulnerability to natural disasters and disease. Pick the lesser of two evils but I sincerely doubt if humanity is able to pick the the first, 'unnatural' way.
*coughs violently*

Oh yeah? Well that'll show those griefing motherf*ckers some justice for killing all those exhumers.
Full spectrum dominance is the desire of those in power and it is not for the benefit of their people, only for the economy which is oiled by a nations consumption (of ever scarcer resources). People are naturally greedy and destructive. The sooner this planet enters another ice age the better. F*ck you all.
