27'' panel and Sapphire 5870. And I simply must say that EVE looks AWESOME @ 2560x1440 I know that owners of 3x30'' setups will laugh at this, but I'm happy geek anyway.

Very nice - I upgraded my own monitor to a 28" a few weeks back and have the same card as you and yes, it is BREATHTAKING how pretty this game is.
Hope you have a fun weekend with your new toys :) .

I have to ask, do you recon the extra 100ú was worth it over the 5850?
Although, it has been 3 months since I built my setup with the 5850, so it might not be that much pricier anymore. They perform pretty much the same anyhow
Graz on the setup and welcome to the eyecandy club!

Couldn't say because didn't tested 5850. I had 4870, and compared to that one 5870 is definitely better :) 5870 (Sapphire Vapor-X) also features nice cooler and it adjust clocks on the fly so when not gaming its rly cool and quiet. So far (other than EVE) I tested it with Bioshock II and it runs everything maxed on max resolution.
Also, when talking about such cards and gaming, "worth" is very relative term.

Two 42" 120hz 1080p panels with a 9800GTX+. Your extra 500 pixles mean nothing to me so Hah!

full hd = 1920x1080 = 2.037 MegaPixel 27" 2560x1440 = 3.686 MP 30" 2560x1600 = 4.096 MP
so one 30" has double real estate than a full hd screen, no matter what actual panel size.

Which still only boils down to about 500 extra pixles so you don't really perceive any extra space even if you can get a extra few lines of the forums on your screen. Its like fps junkies gloating over getting 300 fps in their favorite shooter when your physical perception fell behind at around 60~100 fps. All I know is that my friends upon seeing eve or any other game played on my 42" screens(especially supcom in dual screen mode) are like 'whoa! thats a tv?!' even though its *only* running at 1920x1080.

You get quite a bit extra space to use for other stuff as you don't have to play in fullscreen to fit the same amount of information on screen.
Here (sorry about the bad picture) you can see four clients running windowed at 1920x1200 and it is quite a lot of space around each window. Had it been 1920x1080 windows instead then the difference had been even greater. 520 vertical pixels in fullscreen is really handy for both local and the overview list as it is nearly 50% more vertical space compared to 1080p.
Now if I want to show off EVE in its full glory I'll start up the client here as LCD has no chance in hell to compete with plasma regarding image quality.

Well 'quite a bit' of extra space is rather too subject to the opinion of the user so I'll just agree to disagree. As far as the lcd vs plasma image quality debate that completely depends upon the models being compared. The entire reason I went with the LG-70 panels was due to the impressive stats but most importatly it looked identical or even better than the much much much pricier plasmas that were on display at the time. Like I said the only thing that really matters is what it looks like to you personally or if you like a bit of e-peen what your friends say.(all of whom are like whoa! and yes they have the normal 20~30 inch computer only panels too ;p) Now if they made a 42" panel that supported the largest common computer resolutions I would most likely sell these off and get a new set but atm they are simply not available in sizes bigger than 30" which to me is far too tiny even if you techically get a slightly higher resolution.

Anybody here able to fit the gargantuan ATI 5970 into their tower? 30 cm seems like an insane video card. And I'm pretty sure EVE looks awesome and doesnt drop below 60 fps with that thing.

I was thinking of upgrading my monitor as well, but was unsure of how much of a performance hit the increased resolution would create.
Could anyone here shed some light on this? Currently my computer can handle EvE on full settings, no problem.

I never got the feeling that EVE was all that sensitive to resolution ù if there was stuttering, reducing the graphics quality and turning off effects did far more than turning down the resolution did. There are some settings (bloom, iirc ù don't have the client in front of me) that explicitly say they'll be affected by the resolution, but if you can use it at all, the difference isn't all that large. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Any stock (standard ati) coolers are less effective therefore much louder than specialized ones. If you want to have quiet(er) machine or OC card, one solution is to swap stock with specialized cooler. This involves burning extra $$$ for cooler, could be tricky for non-techy persons and also removes warranty. Or to buy card with better than stock coolers. That's why I chosen Sapphire Vapor-X series because its quieter than for example Toxic series. Toxic is also factory preOC'ed higher than Vapor series.
If buying new cooler be sure that your PC case is well ventilated.
Because I'm mostly working on my PC I don't want to hear vacuum cleaner sound from it. So before this 5870 gpu I was using Ati Tray Tools to DC and lower vent speed of my card. With non stock CPU cooler my PC is allmost fully silent when not gaming.

What videocard do you use? I use the ATI 4350 in my HTPC and no flicker in EVE at 1920x1080.
Get some budget HDMI 1.3b certified cable. No need to waste money on expensive cables. I think the HDMI cables I use are in the ú2.50 range.

Technically its 'just' a computer panel that happens to support way more inputs with additional circuitry to upconvert older lower res sources to smooth as buttah 720p or 1080p depending on what input it is. Otherwise its identical or even superiour to most computer only panels even if it 'only' runs in 1920x1080. Originally by: Admiral Pelleon Edited by: Admiral Pelleon on 23/08/2010 11:26:50

Nothing wrong with a 37" display as its certainly 'big' enough. And even though I have two large panels I tend to only use one for the computer and stream netflix off the ps3 on the other. Dunno what it is but streaming netflix looks 100x better on the ps3 than on the computer even if they are using identical screens. Originally by: Jovialmadness Zeba? TWO 42" displays!! WTF.

Mow a few yards. LG has 240hz panels now that are less than half the price of the 120hz ones I bought a couple of years ago.
