Camera Drones haven't been used in Decades. They were used when the first pods (Given to the Calamari by the Jovians which were then retrofitted by the Calamari to work with our puny brains) were made. "Modern" pods use a sophisticated network of sensors to create a fake colour image that we "see" and simulate "sounds" (optional) in order for us to not go mad, as well as provide us with on the fly, real time tactical information such as local stargates or pilots in the vicinity. This has the advantage of generating far higher resolution images and is upgradeable with a simple firmware upgrade (remember a few years ago), as well as better synchonisation with the "sounds". The disadvantage however is that it is a lot more sensitive to spacial distortions which can, in some cases, increase latency, slow reaction time or cause the pilot to fall in a temporary comatose state.
