Hey All,
I am hoping to understand this game and the kind of mentalities it attracts.
Why do you all play this game? To derive pleasure you derive from frustrating other players? To learn how much you can make other people suffer? To learn how to make the world a better place? What do you sincerely hope to achieve by playing this game?
What do you do in game and why does it attract you? Are the numbers of the economy side so nice? Is sadistically oriented pleasure the highest form of pleasure you can conceive of? Do you secretly want to conquer the universe and be worshiped by a kingdom of pixel pilots who by and large derive their pleasure from depravity, in a universe without virtue or justice on the other hand filled with heartlessness and cruelty?
So what do you actually do? Is it what you honestly want to do?
Sincerely, Sander |

I play this game beacuse it is a single-server-sandbox.
That's all, no mystery.

Of course I love frustrating other players.
There is nothing quite like taking an unprobable ship into a lowsec system and going to watch some TV.
Oh dear, you don't want to see local when I get back. Spelling mistakes, leet speak, grammatical errors all are there in abundance. It makes you wonder how this is possible.

Simply because of the way Eve is designed it tends to attract sadists, bullies and kiddies in need of lots of attention (see Goons). Been playing since '06 and no reasonable excuse has ever been provided as to why these types do what they do, so don't expect a logical answer as to why they do it.
BUT, there are also lots of players with good sportsmanship in the game. Don't let the forums fool you. The minority makes a hell of a lot more noise than your typical player.

This game is designed for those that enjoy inflicting torture as well as those minding their own business building sandcastles in the sky.
How you play does say alot about your psychology.

àit certainly seems to attract a lot of people who feel that being shot at in a game built around non-consensual PvP is an awful violation on their personal integrity and a direct attack on their person. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Burn free time in a reasonably enjoyable manner.
Quote: What do you do in game and why does it attract you?
I have done a bit of just about everything I thought would be interesting to try, and there are still enough things left over that I could do if I decided "hey, let's try this too"... and what attracts me is the width of things available to do.
Quote: So what do you actually do?
Right now and in the more or less recent past ? Long trading and forum spelunking.

I act differently in real-life than ingame. Maybe I lack a bit compassion with people, who take bits and bytes overly serious, because I don't take them serious.
EVE has the romantic charme like pirate movies and similar stuff. I also derive a certain pleasure from being forced to stay on my toes. I like that thrill in-game. I get bored fast, if I run missions in high-sec, on the other hand I don't get bored, if I am in 0.0, where I need to watch local for hostiles and am in survival mode.
In reality it's different. I also like it exciting, but I neither want to risk my life, nor do I want to risk other peoples life. So EVE is a compromise, experiencing a little of those fantasies and the thrill without actually harming anyone or getting harmed and being able to log on and off, whenever I want.
Besides I enjoy playing with others, enjoy problem solving and a friendly relaxed athmosphere, too, which I can also get in EVE and also while doing pvp with others.
So yes, if someone really suffers in EVE and doesn't think something like: 'Okay, this time they got me, I didn't pay enough attention or just had bad luck. But I'll get over it.' and doesn't take things a bit relaxed and with sportsmanship, then I think he maybe plays a game that's not right for him and should sort himself out, because he takes things just overly seriously.
Ok, maybe one should have compassion with it and adapt his own playstyle to it, but yes, it's not really comprehensible to me, because for me it's a game. I know that I can get ganked, I know strategies to prevent that, it's one of my ambitions in this game to stay relaxed and make it, even if the environment is a bit harsh and doesn't treat me nice all the time. Like I said, the thrill is fun and it's just a game.

I started playing eve because I like space ships and online games (and eve has both lol), but I HATE role playing and elfs and crap like that.
I found I like the automated ("captain" of the ship, not it's "pilot") nature of the game, as I'm not a great twitch/shooter player.
Only after all of that did I discover that EVE was a cold and unforgiving sandbox. That didn't attract me to the game, the stuff I mentioned above did, but later on I found I like it. ANY sandbox is going to reflect human nature, thus the "meanness" people cry about in eve.
IRL I'm in law enforcement, so nothing anyone does in eve seems the slightest bit sadistic to me, compared to real life lol. The only people who think EVE is "harsh" are people who've never been around real people much.

However they do carry clubs, maze, pepersprays, strips and handcuffs, shields, armor plating and helmets! submachine guns, pistols, riffels, APC's, watercanons and tend to violate the most basic human and constitutional rights.
EDIT: I can still write here because my sub hasnt expired yet, and I am so filled with bile and venom, that I must vent my anger here.

You'd still need good reflexes and motor skills to subdue people. There's also cars, which they'd be expected to drive at speeds higher than civilians do.
The only job which would be more demanding of reflexes and motor skills would be the military.

How does the ability to move a mouse at high precision reflect on a person's "hand eye coordination?" Maybe they just don't practice by playing FPS's 20 hours a day and instead spend it at the range shooting the wings off flies?
Also, I wouldn't say Eve is harsh at all. People just act human because they're allowed to. Other games forbid it. |

I like building things.
EvE has wonderfully deep mechanics for that, right from gathering the raw materials through to selling the finished products on the market. The market itself is pretty amazing all on its own. The guys who like to blow things up add in an element of risk to almost everything worth doing on top of it all, and the consequences for failure are severe sometimes. Things often take a lot of planning and time to see to fruition, and that also appeals to me on some weird nerd level I can't explain.
