hi all,
I can't get into game to try this till the weekend (damn RL) but I was wondering if having a MWD enabled (and then cut) helps you get to your warp speed quicker? if so, is there a "best practice" for doing this? Do you activate the MWD for a single pulse or leave it on, or what?
thanks

Edited by: SurrenderMonkey on 24/08/2010 20:31:29 The short answer is yes, provided you're in a ship with a >10s alignment time, like an Orca. And you cycle it once. This can get an Orca to warp from a dead stop in 10 seconds. It's normal align time with max skills is closer to 40 seconds.
Note that it does not work the same way if you are already in motion (in the wrong direction), such as when undocking. It's primarily for gate-to-gate jumps. --------------- Faction-Militia:Player-Alliance::Newbie-corp:Player-corp |

Acceleration in EVE is based on 3 main things: Mass, Agility, and the differential between current velocity and the desired velocity.
Now an AB/MWD will do 2 things when activated: Increase ship mass, and boost the max speed of the ship. (as well as the MWD's sig radius bloom) The increase in mass will slow the ship's total time to accelerate to the new max speed. When the AB/MWD shuts off, however, the ship is now much closer to the desired speed in the proper direction.
Generally, as mentioned above, this trick is used for gate to gate travel. With a bit of practice, it's also effective in making large changes in velocity when getting launched from a station. (Multiple cycles of the AB/MWD may be needed)
The reason that the MWD is generally more popular is the shorter cycle time combined with the much higher boost percentage. The downside is that while the MWD is active, the ship is one monstrously large, easy to lock/shoot target. _______________________________

Like above posters already said, it can only be used to enter warp faster if you are in a ship with an align time of over 10 seconds and you only pulse the MWD once.
If you're in a ship with less than 10 sec align time, you'd warp faster without touching the MWD. If you leave the MWD on, you go into warp roughly 50% later, regardless what ship you're in.

You will also be a much bigger and easier to hit target during that time...
It is very popular to use the MWD-Cloak trick tough.
Originally by: Jethro Jechonias For a frigate it is not worth the effort. You will almost certainly be able to align faster without using it. This trick is more useful on heavier ships.
It takes practice to get it right. This is how it works:
- Align to destination - Activate MWD - Activate Cloak - Wait for MWD to finish its cycle - Deactivate Cloak - Warp to destination
The key is that your MWD will not deactivate until it finishes its cycle. This allows the MWD to counter act the webbing effect of the cloak.
What you are hoping for is that your MWD+Cloak speed is approximately the same as 75% of your regular speed. If it is, then you can warp the instant you decloak at the end of the MWD cycle, as you momentum will hold you at the speed needed to warp.
If you decloak too soon or too late, then you need to accelerate before you can warp.
The other catch, is that if anything gets within 2500m of you, your cloak won't work so you will be vulnerable.
This will even work with Orcas if you do it right Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenĘt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie

I would love to see your fit to make this happen. Lord knows I have been trying but it seems the poor agility of this ship combined with the cloak "break" seems to make it impossible for me to do it.
I have even tried this with 2 Istabs in the lows and failed every time. Am starting to think this is an urban legend ( or maybe my Orca pilot just needs more navigation skills)

If you're in a ship with less than 10 sec align time, you'd warp faster without touching the MWD. If you leave the MWD on, you go into warp roughly 50% later, regardless what ship you're in.
Also, there is another somewhat beneficial trick, when combining a MWD with an improved cloak - the speed bonuses combine (as long as MWD was activated before cloak was activated), and you get a cloaked speed slightly faster than no-MWD, no-cloak speed (depends on actual ship mass)... so whenever the MWD expires (it won't recycle while cloaked, but it will keep effect for the whole current cycle even if already cloaked), if you drop the cloak fast enough, you'd end up almost exactly at the desired to-warp speed. That trick won't make you warp faster though, just slightly "safer" (in bad neighborhoods).
Actually, you can activate the cloak before activating the MWD if you do it fast enough, and this is preferred as it means you're already cloaked before the server ticks and the sig bloom hits, meaning it's near impossible for an enemy to lock you in time.
