I suppose submarines are the closest we have to spaceships. Sealed machines of war.
BBC: HMS Astute
HMS Astute is among the most advanced hunter submarines in the world. It has acoustic panels that dampen its sonar signature. Only the those in command in the Royal Navy know how good it is. It can carry up to 48 spearfish torpedos and many Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles. With a nuclear power plant it will never need refueling in its 25 year life span. Its operational longevity underwater is limited by its food provisions. And the crew are kept well fed for morale.
Though the Royal Navy does not have the huge power projection ability of the US Navy with its carrier fleets (which will change with the advent of the Queen Elizabeth super carriers) It can turn the tide of a conflict with its submarine fleet.

The new submarine could have a huge impact in any future conflict HMS conqueror proved that in the Falklands, the sinking of the Belgrano radically changed the Argentinian naval deployment plans.

Does it get a probing bonus?

they forgot the major byproduct of nuclear reactions - heat. I dont see it mentioned anywhere that this thing leaves a giant plume of heated water in its wake....

But is that enough heated water to affect sonar in a detectable way (aka a mini-thermocline.)
And given how well EM energy penetrates water, I don't see ships or planes using IR to find a submerged sub.

Edited by: Vogue on 03/09/2010 18:06:49 The only post WW2 'modern' sea war has been the Falklands Conflict. This short study Falklands Conflict shows that the Royal Navy had free reign in submarine ops as the Argintinians has no decent Antisubmarine Warfare component. But also as the Royal Navy had poor visibility of air threats for its naval fleet it basically used its frigates as perimeter cannon fodder. Which resulted in the sinking of HMS Sheffield by the French made Exocet missiles. The Exocet missile above all was the Argintinians most deadly weapon.
Since the Falklands war more emphasis has been put on better radar visibility of the battle space by having helicoptors and planes have radar. The US Navy in particular has its Aegis system which is a unified battle space threat monitoring and response system.
Also it asks how vunerable carrier groups are. If you have played Harpoon - the naval warfare simulator you know you can shred a carrier with a wing of bombers that carry anti ship missiles. And in that study an American admiral was quoted as saying a carrier would only last a few days in a conflict.

well, the random documentary on sciencechannel, nuclear powered subs apparently have these giant heated water trails.. Of course, they never actually showed it, but id imagine even a few degrees difference in water would skew sonar... enough to be able to guess there is a target there somewhere...

Nice program of updating the UK fleets going on - sadly it looks like the 'cherry' on the cake, the carriers, is to be put back. I saw a program the other day, probably on history or discovery, but it showed a new american sub (i believe it was american) that was just pure beauty - i mean the lines and shape of it was stunning. Sadly i didnt pay enough atttention to know if its real or just a architect generated design.
Can anyone help fill in the void ?

Don't worry, I'm sure some imaginary enemy will be conjured up to justify the spending of billions of pounds a year on security contracts before this thing expires.

When the submarine needs to proceed under stealth, the sub will run off of stored energy in batteries. The advantage that using a nuclear reactor gives is that the sub does not need to surface.

And two months later they were saying how thankful they were that they had a piece of steel that could feed the entire population of Africa for years.

i was also under the impression that it was rather difficult to start a nuclear reaction onboard a sub once you stopped it?
