Catchy subject no? Ok this isn't going to be some mega post about outing probably the only 100% trustworthy person in eve and im sorry to anyone that wanted me to post something like that. This is a thread about lotteries.
Back in the day eve lotteries were a bit different to how they are now. You would have say 35, 40 or 45 tickets for sale, people would choose their number(s) and post them in the thread. The winner was determined by something outside of thew game but verifiable to as many people as needed (say the first ball drawn in a state lottery on a pre-set date). These were mostly fare to the customers (in that they were hard to subtly cheat with, the scam was to just do a runner with the isk at the end and not give out a prize, something you could only do once per alt). All was well.
Then Chribba came along and changed things up a bit. Using his trustworthy status in eve he started the first 100+ ticket game (I think it was actually over 9000 tickets). The game went well and someone walked away with a titan (ie, he stayed trustworthy), but the damage was done. Overnight almost all of the lotteries changed in to 100+ ticket games, many of them with no way of knowing who had bought what number or even how the results were chosen. The scam potential for this type of lottery is huge.
So why did Chribba decide to make it so the scammers had a much easier time? Does he in fact have a scamming alt? Was he paid off? Did he in fact not know what he was about to unleash on to the eve universe?? And when we people realize that they are ALL being scammed? And yes, I mad that my lottery scam didn't go so well so im trying to take you all down...
Any questions?

Bah. I won a hulk from a big lotto using Chribba's dice. I quickly lost it shooting at wspace rats which is fine cause I dont mine anyway and it sucked at shooting stuff but I digress
Why would Chribba need to scam. Seems to be doing very well for himself cashing in on his rep already, and really I think it would be kinda anti-climactic of him to pull some stupid stunt no matter how big it was, all his work and rep blown for an entertaining 80 page thread then everybody;d just move on yawn.
My conspiracy theory is he's actually a ccp alt as part of some level of baseline stability policy
But the bottom line is simply put, someones gotta be chribba, why not chribba, and haters gonna hate..

While it indeed seems like lottery scammers have gotten an easier time the reason why I did not go with the earlier "let's use the bonus ball on MegaLottery Weekly on CNN" was the simple reason that the winner can be drawn when the lottery is over and thus making the whole process more streamlined.
Imagine my over 9000!! ticket lottery selling out in one day, when I estimated it to take a month - and thus saying let's wait for the bonus ball next month, long wait. And the other reason I chose to move away from that is because of the number of tickets and there really isn't any suitable method of randomly chose the winner based upon eg bonus balls and the likes, if the bonus ball ranges from 1-50, what chance do the other 51-9000 ticket holders have?
So for me it was a simple way of getting around a whole lot of problems that occur when the ticket numbers exceed 50.
As to why there was so many others following, I have no idea, it was never the intention to make the lottery thing like it is today, as even I think it has gone a little bit out of hand, but then it probably the FOTM when it comes to selling stuff. Frankly I didn't expect the lottery thing to turn to what it is today at all.
And yes it was a catchy subject, I thought you had the forum warrior status to get enough attention without using false subjects... Which brings me to the question... have you been slacking?

That is simply too easy imo. You can be trustworthy to an incredible level, but you are now simply abusing that trust. Use a public way, a total transparent way of doing things. If people have to wait 1 month (or whatever) for all the tickets to be sold, it will not be such a damage to them to wait some more days for a public draw.

Do you think things through at all? I mean, except stating the obvious (to all normal persons at least), this is natural behavior. Chribba made something he though was interesting, other people got greedy. ALL lotteries are basically scams, look into it.

Obviously the lotteries that Chribba is involved with are not as ethical as the ones you might be acquainted with In Real Life. You know, the ones that claim to fund schools, or public health, or trustworthy government- easily proven, concrete goals that we can all get behind.

I missed the relevant quote with this comment and this statement was inregards to all the lottos all over the place, and who was to blame for them.
If you look at the majority of lottos they are all obviously derived from Chribba, Grendell and Mine. Although I like stalking Chribba, mine are actually based off Torn Souls / BIG and this is the reason why mine are usually non-profit, the reason for my 10k+ tickets is because of Chribba tho :)
Regarding the tools for lottos made by Chribba, although I'm sure he had them planned anyway - I annoying him until he made the Dice tool, as coupled with a secure 3rd party ticket tracking site it makes lottos pretty hard, if not impossible to scam.
On another note, I can't wait for CCP to make the new sub-forum just for lottos, maybe then we can have our sell forums back.

lotteries are all scam as long as the ticket number pick is not transparent and bound to public events (like real lotto numbers).

Could you not just publish a function at the start of the lottery which combines the 5 lottery balls into a number in the required range? Like use the first two balls to get a number from 1 to 2500 via = ballone + 50 * (balltwo-1)
Some don't publish ball drawing order, but can work around that by combining all the drawn balls together with a formula (I'm sure the clever EVE community can develop one)
Just wondering if the OP would like this better.

Before I get flamed, this should not be used as the first ball cannot be picked again, so some number can never be hit with this formula.
There is a formula which can convert the drawn balls to a uniformity distributed random number, in the range 1 to the number given by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combination

generating ticket numbers according to the lottery pattern would be perfectly fine. For example, 2 concatenated numbers from 01 till 49, the number of combinations would be enough to cover about 2500 tickets. That simple. If not, take 3 numbers from 01 till 49 for the coverage of 117k tickets.

i dont believe any lottery is legitimate. except when ticket numbers and corresponding owners are known publicly and the draw related to rl events. if thats not the case nobody can veryfy the drawing and even if the drawing follows the rules, it can be repeated til the right number hits. i wouldnt trust any lottery thats run by not veryfiable methods. be the lottery owner chribba or anybody else. u are probably all getting scammed big time.

Then when he changed the day or particular lottery being used as the standard a lottery manager would be accused of changing the rules of the game mid stream. There is no satisfying some people :-p
Lotteries in EVE is the same as everywhere... The poor can spend some money in the hopes that they'll get something for nothing, and most of the time be disappointed.
If people really care that much, go and protest over in the forum for game change suggestions and have CCP add a function in game to generate a random number.
When I read the sell orders forum choked with lotteries I always assume it is people who want to sell a ship over market value but don't care to put in the work to find a single buyer :-p

True. Don't get me or Chribba wrong. I seriously doubt he will be pulling the ultimate scam until its a given that eve is dying and he is looking to convert all that veld into rl isk.

Yeah but shes not as hot as me and her boobs aren't as big. We used to sit around and compare them when we were younger before we had the pillow fights. We also arent sharing boyfriends any more as she has horrible taste in men and always picks the loosers.

Maybe we can ask ccp for something similar to how WoW does random rolls. It would show in local, or in a dedicated channel "Mercie Orion rolled a random number between 1-10000, the dice landed on number 1234" with a command prompt like /random 10000
Then the person holding the lotto can announce when the dice roll is going to happen, and in what system or in what channel. So when the dice is rolled IN GAME, it tells you what the range of numbers were, and there can always be enough people present to verify that the dice was only rolled one time giving a random number for the ticket and enough people are present during the dice roll to verify what number it landed on.
That would be almost scam proof other then just taking the money and not giving a reward at all, which could still happen, but would put an end to people awarding the prize to friends or alts and CLAIMING it was random. I'm not sure how much work it would take to add that to the game but it'd be worth a look considering how many people are trying to run lotto's these days.

I like this OP. All the "secure" lotteries are made on "trust" many argue Chribba is 100% trustable but how does anyone actually verify this? Chribba could easily pick a number and preset it to someone he likes or set it to one of his alts. In a game where big names run away with trillions of isk, what's to stop Chribba from waking up one day and saying "SCREW YOU VELDSPAR HERE I RAGE QUIT AND ROB EVERYONE IN A MEGA triple titan draw". Not saying he would but he could if he wanted to or maybe he already did... how would you know for sure? do you live in his head?
FYI only using Chribba as an example :) nothing against him.

Originally by: Lana Torrin Catchy subject no?
Nobody is 100% trustworthy.
