My thoughts exactly. "Happy birthday" could be a reference to a re-birth (in a clone). But on a second thought, it's not logical - unless you could be transfered to a clone without being in a capsule.
I think it meant more like a business transaction was concluded, she's handing him the C3 and she's saying Happy Birthday in the sense that she's giving him a gift. Of course this is just my opinion.

Think about that the next time you're dropping off for a bite.
Excellent. I absolutely love your sense of perspective on this. Masterfully done, for this alone you should be commended. |

nice thoughts. it shows that SF was always and forever about humans, and what it means to be one.
*fishy business*
imo, that's just taking things too literally. in-game travel times are design choices to make playing interstellar spaceships bearable. i find idea that fish will casually get from (actual!) river anywhere within cluster to someone's bowl within 1 hour is just ridiculous.
is that official lore: crossing cluster in hours is common; insta jumps with no preparation except for lighting cyno; crossing systems in minutes is norm?

I read it (quite possibly completely incorrectly) that she was giving them to her for free because they were both perceived as a part of the Sani Sabik one aspect of which is the Blood Raiders. I am thinking the reason for the large quantities of the drug and its availability might be that the Blood Raiders have found a new source (wormholes?) or found a way to re-harvest the drug out of the blood or pod of capsuleers they have targeted (as C3-FTM is a key part of pod life support systems).
But I may be reading the /wrong/ innuendo out of this.

Most gate campers don't bother with brains now... don't see how that would change if they disembody :D

Oh man... this one's gonna give me a headache.
Why am I getting the feeling that killing yourself near a Sleeper structure might be important... first, Lianda Burreau goes to the Mirror in Vitrauze Project, and dies. Now this Sabik fellow is planning on purchasing a large quantity of C3-FTM, with dreams of living as data among the stars...

To be clear, I love the chronicles, I've never read one I didn't like on some level.
I didn't want to do the knee jerk "OMG, best evah!" typical response.
So I read it.
I left it for a bit.
I read it again.
I'll re-read it tomorrow with a clear head as well, just to check my findings.
Dropbear, you need to write more, seriously, polish or no polish, you've got a talent.

very nice.
and as always very confusing
So little question here is who was the main character?
I'm assuming it was a girl from ôMa'am, I would like to remind you that there is no sleeping allowed in Terminal 1.ِ. I didn't pick that up on my first read through, maybe it's too simple but could she be Otro's sister? ------------------------------ God is an afk cloaker |

Now, maybe I'm reading too far into this, but here's my take.
Capsuleers have a separate area of the stations available them, which will justify Incarna not having to be immensely populated by NPCs.
However, capsuleers might have 'instances' of 'b-lining' available them in the form of missions interacting with the NPC floors. This is where the shady activities could take place, maybe even a form of PvE combat?

NICE posthuman foreshadowing. (And isn't that what some suspect the Sleepers became?) (And wouldn't that explain a lot about Jamyl Sarum's post-life transformation?)

Something I've always kind of wondered is what happens if a capsuleer gets killed while not in a capsule - just while walking around on a station or planet etc. Since the cloning thing relies on a brain scan being taken the exact moment the pod is breached and sent to the new clone, and there's obviously no way to get a brain scan instantly while just walking around, is this the only circumstance in which a capsuleer can truly die?
Seems like quite the Achilles' heel if I'm understanding this right.
Maybe it works in a way similar to Jumpclones. And then there's the DUST 514 thing, where soldiers will be dying/respawning/dying again with some new tech.
Or even cooler in my opinion, maybe CCP takes a page out of Cory Doctorow's book (literally), and capsuleers regularly make "backups" of themselves--whenever you enter/exit the pod, or something. (on a totally unrelated note, go read Cory Doctorow's "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" for some good sci-fi)
Besides, CCP is saying that at least for now, you will be unable to "fight" in Incarna.

Whoa...I never even had the perspective that they might be trying to make, or find a "Heaven"!
Great, now I have to re-read.[good post]
And Incarna 'could be for fixing problems, or starting them'...hint at PvP, contracted/bountyhunting assasinations??? [Do want! Needed for many years in space too]

I'm probably much slower than the rest. I had to read it a few times and I still don't get all of it.
However my favorite part:
Quote: The important phrase here is highly controlled environment. You can't say it is anything else. A scanner pores over your brain, capturing every last thought, every memory, every personality defect, and it does this why? Because your capsule was breached.
Because someone just proved how fragile that egg really is.
And that cloning facility you wake up in?
That cloning facility is surrounded by some of the most high-clearance people in the field - these invisible caretakers who oversee the rebirth of the universe's elite. They have a job with an importance like no other in our world, and with it, surveillance and monitoring you won't see anywhere else either. They are the real bodyguards. If a corporate CEO is waking up in one of these facilities, his contingent on the ground have already failed, and this, the most sacred of contingency plans, now depends on the people in the white suits. Obviously, not everyone is comfortable with that, least of all us capsuleers who won't often admit how tenuous our grip on everything really is.
Why? Because these people in white suits could make things go horribly wrong for you and me.
I think the reason we've started installing cloning vats on our largest, most powerful ships has less to do with logistics and more to do with trust issues.
... and to me, that explains why high standings are required to gain access to cloning facilities.
I'll probably make more sense of the rest of it after a synth and Quafe cocktail.
