I have one used alt and one unused alt.
Alt 1: his job is to sit in a WH and scan the exit when I want to go in. That is it.
Alt2: his job is to take up space... and be something nice to look at.
Both are on my main account, so not sure if they count as alts. |

I have many alts (and a few mains, because i don't really differentiate between the main chars and alts, an alt for me is a secondary/tertiary character on account that gets no skill training whatsoever, main ones are the ones that usually have skills training), so i'll just list main specialties for main chars and then general uses for alts.
Mains (one char per line, most used roles first):
1. pvp - fleet support (gang boosters, leadership), battleships, t3, blackops, logistics, recons, covert ops, interceptors, HIC; pve - missions (battleships), orca pilot, noctis, perfect industrialist; - helps others to blow spaceships up, can also build spaceships.
2. pvp - carrier pilot (combat, triage), logistics, battleships, recons, black ops, HIC; pve - missions (battleships, carrier, logistics), freighter and jump freighter pilot, blockade runner pilot; - prevents friendly players from being blown up by other players; transports stuff
3. pvp/pirate - t3, battleships, HIC; blows things up, supercap tackler;
4. pve - miner, freighter pilot, blockade runner pilot - scourge of veldspar, transports stuff;
Alts (collective roles for alts):
suicide scout, neutral scout, jita-dweller, ninja-salvager, disposable cyno and a titan pilot - last one's worth mentioning separately.
Basically, first three main characters complement each other by having different but very synergizing roles in pvp fleet, but they all have overlapping areas in case i need to focus down to brute force. They also complement each other for pve content, covering pretty much everything, from mining and manufacturing to blowing up npcs, be they simple mission rats or sansha incursion ones. Basically i have at least one character for any possible profession in eve, and most of them can do what i do the most - making players' stuff explode while keeping my fleet from being exploded by the said players. |

All my alts are trained for PI. as each one is effectively an extra 5 planets of yummy resources. 
My second account is the same, tho the main is trained as a falcon pilot. Never know when you might need that OMGWTF-GET-THE-HELL-OUT-OF-THERE!  |

I have a miner and ganker. I mine with the miner and wait for gankers, then have my ganker gank the gankers. If a miner decides to join my miner in a belt, I gank the miner. If I'm bored, I fit the miner offensively and gank miners with my miner and ganker, or gank gankers with my miner and ganker. Some days, just for the fun of it, I put both characters in null sec and see how long they last before they get killed.
Mostly I gank and mine, or mine and gank, or some combination thereof. I'm a ganking miner or a mining ganker. I like gank and I like mining. But mining is only fun if you are ganking.
You know what they say, gank or be ganked. |

They say that in learning the game Go, it is best to lose your first 50 games as soon as possible. This is because Go is complex, and the only way you will start to get an idea of strategy and play is by first sucking and failing as hard as you can. Initially I wanted my alt to be the industry character whereas my main is the combat character. Then I had an epiphany regarding how stupid and boring industry is so my alt fell to the wayside. I still train skills on him, but it's rather pointless.
My alt now serves as a neutral cloaky warp-to point when ganking in highsec, if I even bother to log in at all with him.
I canceled that account. There's just no point.

A very good question which got me thinking about alts in general. I haven't bothered setting up an alt yet, because I begrudge shim any skill points.
Things which might influence me to create an alt are:
- Coming up with an awesome character name which I just have to use
- A chance to redo all the tutorials to reinforce everything I've already forgotten
- The ability to do a 'price check on aisle 9'
- Being able to troll on the forums without significant recourse from players itching to issue a war dec
- Having someone I trust who can keep all my ill gotten gains safe, so if I get suckered into one of the eleventy billion scams in game, there is less to lose.

If I had 1 ISK each time a bad idea is posted on the EVE-O Forums, I'd make enough money to live off of PLEX and still be able to afford the stuff I actually need. |

Even without any trade skills it still makes money, and it's nice to check prices on stuff without having to go to The Forge. |
