ok, so I'm interested in smuggling this through the empires and was curious as too, how.
Will a covert-ops ship make it?
Just asking to see if anyone has tried it as I'm too chicken.

I think you have to get an Industrial, stick a shuttle in, and put that Viral agent in the shuttle to be safe from being stopped by Concord or the Customs.

Doesn't work, was patched a while ago.

Any more suggestions?
I've found a wonderfully profitable route or two, I just need to know how to travel.
Will concord/ customs still get ya if ya cloaked?

If this were pre-Exodus, I'd say a covert ops ship would be the perfect thing for the job. Concord and/or customs can't scan what they can't see....and you used to be able to uncloak right on top of the gate and jump almost like an insta bookmark.
BUT....we live in post-Exodus times here. And most C/O ship drivers know that their beloved cloak has been completely screwed up.
Here's a suggestion, pay somebody the cost of their ship and outfit to give it a try if you're not willing to make a whirl of it yourself.
The few times I was stopped with freed slaves in cargo (freed during anti slaver missions), I was webbed/scrambled by customs but politely asked to release the slaves to their custody....or given the alternative of being blasted if I refused.
Since I was on a mission to free slaves, and the slaves were not integral to completing my mission (only needed to bring the captain and crew in for trial), I figured the right thing was to turn them over.
However, having "done the right thing", I still took a security ratings hit (I guess the old adage of "no good deed goes unpunished" is a byline motto incorporated into the game by CCP in this case), but at least I was not insta-ganked by customs.
The reason I tell this story is that you may be able to try the same thing with viral agent and get away with a minor slap on the wrist like I did just to check it and see if a c/o ship will work for your needs.
There will always be some risks involved with smuggling (as it should be), but how you go about doing the smuggling and how you plan to maximize your profits whilst minimizing your danger will determine your success or failure as a quasi Han Solo.

There must be an uncatchable way. Otherwise whats the point. I can get into a covert op's myself, I don't mind taking a security hit, but really don't want to lose a cloaking device. They cost a fortune.
Someone must've tried this. If not how's about an answer from ccp. Are the game mechanics sufficient that there is a way to do it?

Well, it looks like the smuggling isn't implemented fully yet... so far they ensured you can't use any cheap tricks to move stuff, but didn't yet put in the way to actually do it. ^^;
That said, some people reported they had success moving contraband with a fast frigate with MWD. No idea if that's 'intended' way, though. (some sort of official info about the whole system would be nice...)

The devil on my shoulder tells me they wanted all the potential drugrunners to get caught wasting their good standings so that they could be easily profiled against once the smuggling skill was introduced.
After all you can't have a pillar of the community running crash now can you?!
