This is incorrect most sandboxes are actually wooden frames set into the ground that are topped up with sand. I consider myself one of the kids who will dig into the sandbox until I hit dirt and then keep digging to see how far I can go.

Edited by: Antihrist Pripravnik on 17/09/2010 00:08:34 A sandbox is an environment that is unscripted and led by players themselves.
Development of scripted parts of the game (PvE parts) takes time because it is a part of the game not created by players but by a limited number of developers. I can't say that PvE part in EvE is bad. Sure, it have its flaws, but the important thing is that it has evolved over the past years. The developers only need to polish it a little (or little more by some opinions).
Let's take a look at some other MMOs that are not sandboxes just as a comparison. Some major MMOs are not pushing you to the PvP part by constantly developing new PvE content and adding new character levels and in-game items. That might look good for someone who just joined the game because it looks like the PvE part can keep you in game forever. However, after a certain period of time, you realize that it's all about doing the same stuff over and over again and not going anywhere. As soon as you reach the highest level a character can reach, solve all the missions/dungeons and have the newest and most powerful/valuable items in the game, the developer just launches a new expansion that will open new levels for your character, add more missions/dungeons and new more powerful items that you can acquire. It all comes down to a simple grinding. Now that's not a sandbox.
The sandbox, like EVE as the best example, focuses on player created content. And by player created content I don't mean some things you can manufacture with in-game provided tools - like copying blueprints or manufacturing stuff. The real player created content is made by the community and every individual. You are choosing your own path, you can do whatever you want to do in this game and, more importantly, find individuals, corporations or even alliances that are sharing the same ideology. Sure it looks like you are forced into PvP, but it's only because you have to broaden your horizons and see that you actually can choose your own path - if you accept the price for your decision and find a way to mitigate some negative byproducts of your play style. That doesn't make EVE hard, unrealistic or underdeveloped - that only makes it more like a real life. Because in EVE, as it is in the biggest sandbox "game" of all times - The Real Life - you are free only if you think you are free. If you accept the rules of the world, either real or virtual, and try to use those rules for your own profit and enjoyment.
Don't wait for anyone to build something for you so you can relax and enjoy. Open your mind, be free and the world will be your sandbox.

Sandbox describes a sub genre of mmo. Star Wars Galaxies in its first iteration is a good example of what a sandbox is as compared to EVE Online. SWG when it came out gave the player the ability to create and destroy entirely player run structures and economies on the ground.
Creation and Destruction is a big draw of sandbox games. EVE allows you to build your corporations, form alliances, and claim solar systems with the sovereignty system. OTOH you can raze everything to the ground.
Many people complain that PI was a bad addition to the game. On the contrary it fits right in. SWG had a system for crafting that at its root you needed base materials that were harvested from the planets. This system had randomly generating areas of raw materials that would spawn on the planets. You had to survey for the materials, then place harvestors on the highest percentage area to get the best ore/maintenance ratio. Sound familiar?
EVE has two customers that it is trying to appease. Creators, and Destroyers. I think they are meeting this goal well so far.

A sandbox environment doesn't just mean you can do whatever you want 100% of the time, it means your actions have consequences - i.e., if you do missions for one faction, you're going to lose standings with their enemies. Sort of analogous to real-world international politics. Highsec wardecs, I don't see how that makes it any less of a sandbox either. Are you complaining you're being forced into PvP? Sorry, it's a PvP centric game at its roots.
Well as I see it, a sandbox offers equal opportunities to all kinds of playstyles, what¦s a sandbox if only using a shovel is rewarded and those with buckets get pushed out or very limited because the sandbox is `shovel centered` and after 7 years there¦s still no room for people who like to play with seaves. Imo PvP is just one playstyle of many. In a way centering a game around just 1 thing is just as sandbox as centering it around gear aquisition.
I'll put it like this: You *are* allowed to play in whatever playstyle you want. There are plenty of opportunities for both PvP and PvE. The two playstyles, however, interact greatly in the game. You're free to mission, someone else is free to blow you up. You're free to mine, someone's free to gank you. etc etc. You're allowed to play how you want, but so is everyone else.
Or using your analogy, the kid with the shovel is allowed to kick you in the face and steal your bucket while you're just pleasantly trying to build sandcastles. Conversely, you're free to take a bucket full of sand and throw it in his face.

I agree 100% with you. Without going too far off topic though the issue then is some people play games to relieve RL stress. Not leave the RL world to come to a fictional world with the same stresses your trying to escape in RL. Come home from a bad day at work for some mining or missioning only to have your evening ruined by a gang of idiots who suicide gank you for giggles. Now your out the money for your ship and you have to spend time buying a new one, etc.
Yeah, yeah I know.... I can haz yur stufz?

Its a sandbox.....full of cranky 12yo's who wardec just to blow up newer players in mining ships, because (1) having a 4 year lead on skill points makes it a "fair" fight, and (2) shooting at ships that don't even have weapons equipped is fun.

Every now and then people use the word "theme park" to distinguish between EVE and other "sandbox" mmorpgs.
anyhow, sandbox just means you don't have to follow any particular mission, quest or timeline in order to have something to do.
if you go camp a gate or do a roam, this is "sandbox" play I mean you could play EVE 8 hours a day for a year and accomplish absolutely nothing. This is the heart of "sandbox"

In eve, you make your own story and you only can fullfill your destiny! I have done missions to gallente, then moved to nullsec, then moved back to empire and worked for amarr so long that Im banned from gallente space forever! Been pirate in lowsec, ran my own corp, then been on null sec again loosing over billion isk on pvp in very short time. Then moved back to empire and started new corp with focus on indy things. Learned to fly not only gallente battleships but amarr and caldari also. Learned to fly t2 ships that never even tried this far, but if I need to fly one, I can! If I want to put up my own Highsec pos I can do that if I want! If I want to move back to null I can. If I want to pirate in lowsec I can.
You deside that you do, game gives you the tools to do that!
