Part 1.
Because of what could turn out to be problems for some players, this is postet with an alt. It is postet by request and it is as deep as i can go into it.
Eve online the "golden age" (a story from 2005 to 2010 from a few solo pirates)
The Golden age of solo piracy was 2005 to 2008. Doing those years ransoms was fat, clients numerous and the tales about our doing had a small romantic light shining around eve online. A small brotherhood was made, consisting of those who had a RP interest in flying the colours.
The first warning about new tides was the massive start of breaking a 1 vs 1. At first it was blamed by misunderstandings and word play, but soon the real monster showed its face, Kill board points. It only took a few months for this to crawl into the affairs of ransom, and soon the killboard *****s startet to use ransoms and the folowing ship and pod kill to build up a reputation as a awsome bad azz eve pirates. these two things realy changed the field of us solo pirates who actualy kept our word. Clients refused to pay ransoms, extorsion deals was of and the clients began to organise to build up resistance to the so called pirates.
This drew many away from the brotherhood, the reward of solo piracy dropped 90% and our fellow captains simply gave up and joined the masses in the slaughtering. We were 8 left in 2008 and had a hard time doing the RP pirate style of playing. The rest of us began to roam around, joining different corporations and alliances, but after some time we ended up roaming alone, getting back in toutch, just to split up again joining new corps and new alliances.
What we always could talk about was how the deffenition pirate have been used in eve. It was frustrating to se one term being "in our opinion" be mis used by many to look awsome. We were a minority and talked about that the tradition behind our style of playing might had become obsolete in eve. We were now down to 3 active members in the brotherhood (beginning 2009) and things looked dark.
Beginning of 2009 was a strugle, Clients now used alliances and numbers to keep us at bay. This is not a problem for the slaughter heads, but solo pirates things were getting extremly hard. Neutrals repping doing wars, became a rule and capital ships from clients roamed many low sec pipes and the skill points of the average client had arised to a level where they could fly ships that countered many of the normal ships used by our captains.
The situation made us to have, what we belived would be the last meeting of the brotherhood, where the original idea for the meeting was to end the brotherhood. One of the fellow captains had used some time to figure out where it all went wrong and doing the Beer and rum talk on ventrilo we decided in our drunk state that we should not give up, but meet late august 2010 and evaluate things.
From spring to late summer i had a break from eve. I had joint an awsome corp in a big alliance, but real life was hard on me, and i realy could not get into the lag of fleet fights and i simply didnt feel home in such a large group (nothing to do with them, just me and my style of playing eve)
I returned mid august and was called to a meeting in the brotherhood. I was suprised. There were two new members and we were up to 5. This meeting was a long one, but we maneged to rewrite the "code" to fit the new times in eve and shared our experience in how to keep the tradition alive. We made decision about having a place to share what we could, and we made a "rule" in the "code" that we should do our best to help out anyone who wantet to start the trade of solo piracy, and se if we could get even more members into the brotherhood.
Now we are mid september 2010, and again we have found some pride in the trade

Part 2
What is the brotherhood The brotherhood is made up by individuals, not a corporation. People have there own life in eve, the brotherhood is more like a small club for the invitet. The goal of the brotherhood have never been about flying togheter, it was about a small place where the roleplaying part had its place. It was here we made the unofficial rules called the "code" and where we shared our experiences with one another.
To be apart of the brotherhood is about keeping to a tradition and build on it. To have abit more than Kill board points to show, a place where the "kid" who loves pirates can come out. We talk about things concerning the "real pirates", trying to adopt the history of them into eve online. For us the idea about piracy is about to be free.
Members of the brotherhood comes from different corporations and alliances, but in our small forum its not a ticker that counts, its the person behind. Personaly i love the talks we have on ventrilo when we are all drunk and proberbly werry stupid to listen to.
For us the brotherhood is a place where the fun of roleplaying pirate comes first, and with the new things we have agreed on, we will adapt even more and use more of the tools given to us, to keep flying the colours high. again. Things have changed alot since the beginning, but we "after a hard ride" maneged to adopt into the "new, new eden" Traditions are great, but sometimes traditions can be what kills you. We in the brotherhood have a renewed faith in the trade, and for the first time in some years things are looking bright. The biggest isue have been how to show the rest of eve that something like this have existet 5 years, without giving individuals away.
This was postet by request, some wil flame it, some will just skip it, but there is a few who will read it with interest, and it was made for them.
On behalf of the solo pirates in the brotherhood

Holy ****, an interesting good post on C&P????
Unfortunately, I started playing late 07 so I wasn't around for any golden years. I have, however, over the past years seen what was left of the fall of piracy as I have similarly seen the downfall of good C&P threads.
Pirating today isn't the same as it was, even 2 years ago. I hope for your sake it improves, as losec used to be a lot of fun.

Very entertaining read. It's good to know that there are still pirates trying to live out that solo-pirate ideal.
I originally got into this game to be just that: someone who roams about, shooting and ransoming people, often alone, fighting for his living. Coulda been a lot of fun, but life worked out otherwise and now I'm a ninja.
Best times I've had in Eve, though, have been the times when I actually gave the solo-pirate ways a try. Absolute blast. Didn't seem very viable anymore, though; too many blobs, everyone organized into large groups, etc. And most of the so-called 'pirates' seem more intent on blowing stuff up than actually living like pirates .
Anyways, good read, and glad to hear at least someone somewhere is still giving the ideal a shot.

Pirating, and lowsec in general is dead. CCP made sure of that. Nowdays "pirate" is just another term for griefer, new ppl don't know what a pirate is. Htfu and join the blob.

Nice read. Brings back memories of chasing and being chased all around Tribute and Vale. Congrats on still pirating solo. I miss the 2004-2005 style of game we had. Caps online kind of leaves the solo pirate scrounging for targets

I like to think we Tuskers still live like pirates. There's never a blob to be found in this corporation. :) (well, on the other side of the guns)
Also, who exactly would be in this brotherhood?

Edited by: Amaymyon on 17/09/2010 17:08:45 Im impressed in a happy way reading the replys here. Actualy thought this would be on page 666 by now.
I try to give some aditional information as a responce to some of the things postet.
1. The idea about we have is not using the blobs, but find ways to provide us a income that in some way resembles the history of pirates. Doing the last meeting we agreed that we could use some more ways to do this, even if it broke from the original ideas about how to be a "real" pirate. This we had to do so we would fit better into eve anno 2010.
2. Low sec is not dead, but you have to think alternative and more out of the box. I can say that 0.0 actualy have a few places where piracy can be worth it, and WH`s deffently is a part of the new hunting grounds.
3. The brotherhood..hmmm this one is the hardest one to answer. The brotherhood is a place where you set the general rules "the code" for behavior and what is acceptet by the members of the brotherhood. Here its important to remember that we do Roleplay this trade. We use what we like and know about the historic part of piracy and remake the rules and code of conduct that was used by some of the famous real life pirates, so it works in eve.
Nothing is forced on you, anyone can leave if they want but there is alot of fun in it at times werry heatet debates on things....normaly in late hours and drunk it can end up en a "duel" (1 vs 1) to reach an agreement.(this is actualy one of the rules from the code lol)
We are werry fortunate and happy that none of those who have left have made things and names publick, but respectet us for keep on.
there is no recruting, we have found one another on locals, in language chats etc...if found suitet a player will get an invite...but RP solo pirates are not in great numbers...
Hope that answered a few of the things...

Very cool write up Amaymyon. You guys get it. Having a brotherhood, even if in different corps/alliances, where all on the inside share a similar ideology, missions, etc... is awesome. Just by reading your post the idea that you guys have going forth has made the game more interesting to me just by the very thought of what you are doing. Props mate. Good read. Great idea.

Good post guy, I have expressed a desire to have been there in the earlier days myself. Honestly this game has mutated so much in two years that I don't really recognize it anymore. Now it's about killboards and griefing and player vs people, which is truly sad because this game once rocked. Now it is lost among the ranks of WoW, DDO, Warhammer, and Hello Kitty Online. Lolsec is a joke now, with blobs being the punchline. It is the natural evolution of any game like this though, and one that generally goes unnoticed until its too late...which it is.
I believe that there are still some cool people left playing this game, but the griefers have hijacked it for the most part. While I know that every game is going to have them and that's ok, when the ratio of them overtakes the generally cool people, you know that you are borked six ways to Sunday.
Keep up the good work, CCP.

Hello Kitty Online has ALWAYS been about the griefing and killboards. It may look all light and fluffy and made for 5 year old but deep down its a dark world with peddos around every corner. Tread carefully little kitty, for it may be your last step of innocence.

Edited by: Amaymyon on 20/09/2010 06:59:01 Hello again.
I know it sounds kinda gay like, but many solo pirates have read this post and alot of others have send me questions and im amaced that this stil is on the frontpage and its one of the few post not ended up in the CCP moderation blender, i hope that is a sign of respect from those reading and replying here :)
Someone asked me what our dream and hope was for eve concerning solo piracy...
We hope that one day a known solo pirate will put him/her up for election to the CSM. That this person is working on behalf of us, trying to help bring our ideas on how to fix solo pvp in eve to ccp. We dont need whambulances, we need someome to reprecent us on our terms for our style of playing.
All we hear is about PI, Incarna and lagg, someone forgot about us or dont care about us, and the only way this can be fixed is to have one who sites with ccp at a table ingotiating on our behalf (solo pvpFrs in general).
We do belive that CCP is taking "massivly" into to high value and forget there is actualy many who loves to roam around alone. We think there should be room for all of us or eve will end up werry one sided and be a true capital-online game.
Im pretty sure that if somone wants to get electet to the CSM, all this person have to do is to talk for the solo PVP`ers, that would give alot of votes. Im sure there is alot like us who have some ideas how to solve some of the problems in a mature way, and come with ideas that is not "far out" but ideas that would improve the situation of solo pvp.
If you have ideas how to help the situation about solo pvp, please eve mail it to me and i bring it up within the brotherhood and se if we can "lobby" abit. If some out there have ideas that are earthbound and realistic, i would love to get them. If we collect all the ideas and make a good post to ccp with details on this, we might get them to listen. But they wount listen if its the usual give my black ops fighter bombers so i can solo pawn a dreadnaught..... one post, with realistic ideas, from us solo pvp`ers would proberbly work...and then a solo pvp`er / pirate in the GSM lmao

While I am not a pirate myself, I noticed you have got the one recipe for success: Vision.
I hope you endure in your effort and will manage to bring 1v1 back.
When I started the game (2009-ish) one of my main reasons was because in my other PvP MMOs they all talked so highly about EvE as THE PvP game.
I have been quickly disappointed by black screens, lag and most of all, by the blobs and alt armies. Result: I have PvPed more in Darkfall Online in few days than in 2 years in EvE. And Darfall has full loot (including losing money) and may be generally seen as harder mode than EvE. Because I can tip my hat to someone who chose not to gang up and blob me in DFO, while in EvE I found like 3 solo PvPers in 2 years.
Hell some times I miss when I played WH and even in something as lowly as WoW, 1v1 was possible, even in BGs like Alterac Valley. - Auditing & consulting

About piracy...
Solo piracy isn't dead... You don't have to be in low-sec to do some piracy. There's plenty of wormholes leading to 0.0.
When you find one and dare to enter the dangerous unknown space behind the gate... probe there for a while and see where the entrances lead. Leave the your best implants behind... podding my happen also to you.
You can have some pretty decent kills deep in "safe" 0.0 where people either go afk ratting / plexing what ever or just camp some pipe that might lead to "somewhere" where people are hauling loot & salvage.
If you don't get loot, ransom the pod. It's often better deal to zerobear to pay the ransom than getting new clone from "somewhere" and getting also new implants.
WH piracy might on some occasions be "easier" while finding a target but on the other hand... that drake that is tanking class 3 spawn takes quite a lot of beating before it will go down

Bringing this back up for great justice.
Your right lowsec just isn't what it used to be. When i first started playing in 07, I was still inexperienced but experienced enough to notice in 08 when things started to go downhill. It honestly does make me sad to see the state of PvP these days. What i would give to go back to actually see gangs of 1-5 running around..and those who do solo actually kill stuff. I've been fairly inactive lately and this post has kind of inspired me to go out and try and solo in lowsec/null and whs.
Good to know there are pirates out there that stick true to it.
