Does having a low Signature Radius help you avoid incoming DPS even when your ship is stationary? Or only when moving (e.g. speed tanking)?

Depends :
If your attacker uses guns and is stationary - no. If your attacker uses guns and moves - your sig radius does impact his tracking.
If your attacker uses missiles - sig radius lower than missile explo radius will always give some damage reduction.

Yes, it helps.

???
Guns also have signature resolution. Even if the frigate is stopped you can't do the whole damage to the frigate with a Moro's railgun (despite of the proportional damage it receives can wreck the frigate in one volley, the only hope for a frigate is the slow tracking and targeting resolution of the Moros)

Edited by: Deva Blackfire on 17/09/2010 23:02:15 Ofc it can. Test it yourself.
Tho it will be hard to find a frigate that can actually take FULL damage, as their HP is kinda low.

Sry wrong...
Smaller sig radius provides lower dmg from larger guns which do take radius into the gunnery calcs. ------- "Because the Dominix is the Chuck Norris of Eve!" |

Sig radius is a multiplier in firing solutions. If you are immbobile, you are multiplying by zero. This means you're going to get hit if the shooter is also stationary and within range.
You'll still take longer to be locked in the first place mind. Putting the 'irate' into 'Pirate' |

Hit chance formula: http://wiki.eve-id.net/Tracking
According to this, if transversal speed is zero and gun is in optimal range, hit chance is 1 (100%).

Glad there is someone smart in this thread.
For all uneducated people above: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Damage
Signature radius (vs turrets) only affects hit chance as it is taken into account in tracking formula. If you score a "hit" (which happens when your transversal = 0, so when both boats are stationary) damage is just simple AMMO*DAMAGE MOD minus resistances. There is NO signature radius in damage formula.
Evelopedia saying that sig affects damage is just simplified version of saying: sig affects tracking which affects hit ratio WHICH affects final DPS number.

Huh I always remembered it the other way. I really thought that sig radius was measured vs weapon radius for the damage calc... ------- "Because the Dominix is the Chuck Norris of Eve!" |

It was only graphical representation of how sig radius works in theory (pretty much roleplaying mumbo jumbo). Its still available in eve tracking guide, but in reality it is just tracking multipler. So my post [2] stands correct.

If I am not crazy, it's not limited to just being stationary, but any condition that has transversal = 0. This can be 2 ships flying straight at each other, one chasing, or moving in direct opposite directions.
EDIT - spelling

You are correct. The tracking formula doesn't care how transversal (or lack of) is obtained, only the final result matters. Many AB fitted AFs have learned the hard way that a cruiser or battlecruiser that kites you will have no problem hitting you.
And it also mostly works at low transversal. Effectively the sig radius ratio increases the damage reduction you get from a given transversal. If your damage reduction (sig-independent) from transversal is very low, multiplying it by even 10x still leaves you taking 90% damage or more.
Conclusion: if you fit an AB on your ship, I hope you remembered to pay for your insurance. -----------

No, just make sure that it's either fighting in scram range and not getting blobbed or gtfo. AB works in PvP...it just doesn't fool-proof you (not even dramiels)...

Wrong. This is true when you don't fit a scram on you. When you do. The hoping part comes from the enemy. AB + No scram is big no no. With AB you HAVE TO disable that MWD.

Excuse my ingorance but int the attribute "signature resolution" which is on a gun actually the same as "explosion radius" with missiles?

Sort of, but no. With guns, signature radius vs. resolution is a tracking multiplier - and that's that. Doesn't matter who's moving.
Explosion radius vs. signature radius is a modifier on explosion velocity on missiles, in pretty much the same way - it just no longer cares about the firing ship's motion.
It has a secondary effect that it caps damage as well, so you will _never_ take more than explosion radius/signature radius x damage, even whilst stationary.

Confirming my sieged revelation (0.0001 tracking, 1000 resolution) can hit an interceptor if he's a dumb ass who just parks next to me and doesn't move at all.
Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

Yes, it will take longer for them to lock on to you.
The small sig radius still helps you if your attacker is moving, but if you are both still and in his optimal , it should be 100% dps applied.
Missles will always get their damage mitigated if the explosion radius is bigger than the sig radius.

No it's just a modifier to tracking. They could have made the whole thing a lot less confusing by merging the two stats (tracking and sig resolution) in one, as they are never used separately in the tracking formula.
