What I'd like to see is the ability to customise your own ships with your own unique paint job.
After you've fitted your ship, you can chose your ship basecoat and paint design yourself, for a small fee naturally, depending on what colours you use.
The ability to apply your corp logo to the ship would be cool as well.
You can also have the choice to apply the whole colour schemes to a fleet.
For those flying PvP ships, every kill made with that ship can have one of those ship kill icons painted on the side.
I for one could see this being a great addition to the game, so, what are your thoughts and what colour schemes would you use and why?

Would be good as a isk sink, but as said before, think of a fleet battle with 800 people all loading up all the paint jobs!

It is an idea i would whole heartedly support if i wasnt sure that this would make the lag alot worse. Maybe just give us the options to pick the ship colour, even just that would be an inprovement.

Custom paint and stuff for the in-station view might be interesting.
Once in space though, no.
Besides, don't most people have it all zoomed out anyway, so all you see are various sized squares?

Too much work for too little benefit.
Corpoaration or alliance logos showing up on large things, like outposts or titans, would be more sensible. ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

I think it'd be a cool idea, but I don't believe it'd be feasible. Because then next they'd want to customize drones and POSs, and maybe put little names on the sides of turrets.

tbh localized paint jobs would be awesome. i.e. its not sent to/received from server, just reading local files. (its an eye candy after all ) |

Like in the latest ccp trailer where you see the alliance logo above structures. Looked nice.

Imagine a 512kb-1mb texture per player being sent to every player in the fleet on grid loading.
Yeah that will go well. ------

Loading/generating an avatar picture already blocks your client for a second, and I doubt that any pictures are sent between the client and the server here (if so, it would be an incredibly stupid thing to do, since the client can generate it in a few microseconds).
If CCP can get the client right, e.g., by doing resource loading in the background without locking the entire user interface, as every modern game engine should do it, then yeah, bring it on.

This is more a features and idea's thread.
If you look there in the commonly proposed idea's thread you would have found one called player made ship skins. The idea used to come up about once a week, basically its not going to happen for several reasons.
1) Increased lag having to load the customer colour scheme 2) Offensive colour schemes. 3) at the moment all the fan made Eve trailers tie together with the official game models. I am not sure we will attract the the right kind of player if people released video's using the hello kitty skinned kestrel (yes it does exist).
player made ship skins Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Only way to do this would be predefined colos schemes for ships. Like you could buy Guristas type color to you ship if you have enough standings with guristas. Also all color schemes would be stored to local computers. On large fleetbattles only few bits of info is needed to transfer the colors of other ships. Also A corp logo on side of the ship would be nice, this too can be done on local files and only few bits of info is needed to send to other players. Playermade custom skins wont work, only predefined color / patterns made by CCP. But this would give nice variety to ships. Seeing someones Dominix on Gallente officer colors, the orange one, would be sweet. Or seeing some ones raven on Caldari navy colors. Sure you can get different color to your ship when you buy t2 or faction ship atm. Also would be nice if faction ship would have a littlebit different model. Same but improved. maybe some more bells and whistles. Same goes to T2. Roses are #FF0000, Violets are ##0000FF, all my base are belong to you... |

Well, it would make sense to include the option to turn custom paint effects off, it would also protect your eyeballs from Hello Kitty Kestrels too.
I think it would be cool if only alliances could use custom paint effects in their fleets, much like alliance logo. That would limit those pink Thoraxes and other such stuff.
gah.

Wouldn't want this in the game at all. We'll see nothing but ridiculous pink ships with bunny rabbits on the side. It's a serious game. I don't want to see outrageously stupid paintjobs in it.

This. Unless they can guarantee that database entries separate for each ship skin would not cause more lag it wont happen at all.

Is there anything that works when 2000 ships are on one grid? 2000 ships on the grid will kill the client/node for sure...

Edited by: Alice Katsuko on 19/09/2010 15:56:05 Textures are stored on the client computer, because there's usually no good reason to store them on the server, since the server has nothing to do with rendering client-side graphics, except insofar as those graphics represent effects calculated by the server, such as turret and missile fire. Consequently, any 'custom' color schemes would also be stored on the client, with the server only sending an additional 'tag' with each ship on grid that would tell the client which scheme's textures should be used for that ship.
The biggest adverse effect would most likely be decreased client performance, because in place of one texture, the client would now have to load and render several textures. Then again, CCP could just include an option to disable custom color schemes for ships on the client, for those of us who already have to run EVE using the minimum settings. Outside of large fleet fights, though, doubt that such an arrangement would put too much extra load on the server.
That said, it would be nice to have the ability to customize ships to some extent, either by placing corp/alliance logos on them in place of the usual faction logos, or maybe by selecting from a range of available paint jobs. CCP could even charge players for each downloaded paint job. Then again, the amount of effort required to make additional textures for each ship might be considerable, and we might be better off if the art department at CCP were to invest that effort into updating the base textures and models that are already in the game.

Aren't they working on thin client for just that?
Have the custom paintjob on the regular client and not on the thin client.
Problem solved.

Sigh... time to break out the math again...
Every additional byte needed to describe a scene needs to be transmitted n(n-1) times. n being the number of players on grid.
so suppose a fleet warp brings 500 people together, and you are allowed a choice of 128 possible paint jobs(1 byte)
500(500-1) = 249,500 additional bytes in the time it takes to load one grid. By the way the grid loading system is already tasked beyond capacity as is.
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Edited by: Lemmy Kravitz on 20/09/2010 01:20:49 I would love to have my ship pimped out with a custom skin I made, but like everyone has said before. the server will have a heart attack. maybe make it a client side thing, where none of it gets touched by the server. If you're willing to put up with the lag and harddisk space it will take up i guess... idk how it would work.
and as for hello kitty skinned ship.... that actually wasn't that bad looking. In fact.. I would rock it on my typoon cause it would make it look less turd like.
