Does evyone else here have EHS? I just found out today (via stumbleupon, lol) that this freakish thing has a name and that I haven't been hearing ghosts for the past 20 odd years.
Some people thinks it's scary to wake up from the sensation of falling, but this is waaaaay much scarier. I usually hear a loud noice from inside my heap, like a crack, beep or just a bang, accompanied by a flash of light, often with a fractal or geometrical patterns.
I also have sleep paralysis from time to time (was a really long time since last time though), and that totally freaked me out the first times. Thought I was gonna die.

Usually effects the sleep deprived, so EVE players should be rife with it. I have had it a couple of times, very odd experience. ----------------------------------- New Eden Chronicles: Prime, Fanfest 2010 |

This happened to me, just once. It was the word "SUBMARINE" as if someone yelled it in my ear a split second before I woke up. I still remember it because it was so strange.

Sleep paralysis could also be that actually you had an out of body experience(OBE) in your sleep and you came back too fast.
It happened to me a few times, often when i would practice OBE, Lucid dreaming or astral projection...
As for Exploding head sindrome..no never heard of it .P

Bollox. Many people in the world have sleep paralysis every night. It.s a normal part of sleep behavior. As for EHS, nice work on 'diagnosing' yourself from a vague article on Wikipedia. I have Intermittent Explosive Disorder, also diagnosed from the Internet, and indeed caused by the Internet.

It was actually from this I started to search for info of the exploding head syndrome. I just had to see if there was anythign about hearing these bangs just before waking up, and this is it.
And for sleep paralysis; yes, everyones body is paralised during sleep so that we don't move around when we dream, and I don't really buy the hippie-OBE-explanation. Many of the alien abductees are belived to experience sleep paralysis, and long before we belived in aliens; the Night Mare or Devil rode you. |

Edited by: DarthJosh on 22/09/2010 18:02:57 oh wow finally it has a name, i've been looking into this ever since it occurred to me for the first time when i was 20. i am now 26.
i thought it was some form of sleep paralysis since when it happens to me i can't move a muscle. it doesn't happen to me when im sleeping though. im fully awake during the event, i know this because i often get up to wash my face and walk the feeling of horror off.
i have since had it one a year. though last year i've had it happen twice.
i figured it was stress related since i was under inhumane amount of that.
the last time it occurred was around 3 months ago, where then i also experienced an hallucination of a mirror image of myself standing on my ceiling, having black eyes and angry look which then was followed by this image getting on all fours and charging at me, then after experiencing a deep sense of horror it resolved and i could move again, and the sound dissipated.
feels bad man, but it's interesting.
p.s: i haven't really played eve in more than a year and i have had an OK sleep cycle during the last few attacks. -

I hadn't heard of EHS, but I do have Banging Head Syndrome. I just made that up, but ever since I was a wee little kid I've had this habit of banging my head against the pillow.
It was more severe until my late teens, as until then I used to bang my head when falling asleep, while sleeping, and while coming off sleep. Though not all night long I presume. I would even do it for an hour or two consciously during afternoons, while thinking about things, as it helped me focus.
Unlike EHS, and other things reported above, I don't do it out of stress - I'm not stressed, I just do it because I enjoy it. But I ended up figuring that perhaps all those years of banging my head against the pillow may end up doing not so healthy things to my brain, so I stopped doing it consciously.
Nowadays I usually only do it while I'm deeply asleep, every now and then. A few times it has freaked out a bit people who didn't know about it, and suddenly caught me doing it while completely unconscious. Then they try to wake me and ask me if I'm alright, but I just respond I was perfectly fine and enjoying myself in my sleep... until they woke me up.

y'all are weirdos.
I could use some sleep paralysis, my wife would love it if I didn't knee her or roll over on top of her and snore in her ear all the time while I'm sleeping.

What is sad is that I read through that entire article hoping for something actually interesting, perhaps something to do with the bomb or the actual bomber. Instead I read an article that pretty much only explained that the school system in Evanston needs to cooperate better with the police department, and that the parents need to chill.

So that's what that headless body was all about, I was wondering.
I grew up in Skokie, bored suburban kids did all kinds of stupid **** like that when I was growing up, I don't recall any of them managing to blow their heads off though, plenty of blowing **** up though.

Sleep paralysis is a result of becoming aware during REM sleep (usually as you are entering it, or as you are leaving it). Because your brain hasn't exited REM sleep yet, your body is still paralyzed from REM atonia. But because you are fully aware, you become fixated on reestablishing control of your body. Because you are still technically in REM sleep, you can suffer incredibly vivid hallucinations which when combined with the fixation on reestablishing control can cause a panic attack.
Please note that without the paralysis caused by REM atonia, we would actually physically act out in our dreams - this is called REM behavior disorder. ----------

Nice to have a name to put to it. I don't hear the noise in my head, but if I am disturbed when drifting off, car door slamming, heavy footfall upstairs etc, I do get the bright flash of patterned light.
Also had sleep paralysis a few times and that really was scary first time it happened. In my case both of these only happen after excess alcohol and lack of sleep.
