Aside from how amazingly cool that would look!
Formations are a huge part of any type of warfare, eve certainly no exception. The controls for moving relative to other fleet members and enemies is very restricted at the moment.
- Warp fleet to location - Orbit, Keep within, Approach.
While fully automating formations would put all the control in the FC's hands, so making pilots essentially useless - or not, since guns would still be controlled by pilots.
Semi automation is clearly the way to go, extending the orbit/keep within/approach functionality. I'd come up with specific examples but I'm not very creative :)) But my god is it something I'd like to see!!!

Edited by: Pesets on 24/09/2010 06:36:21 I don't think formation flying in actual combat would be particularly useful. However, here's an idea:
Create a "delayed warp" action where you don't just align, but actually choose a point in space where you want to warp (bookmark, specific distance from celestial, etc), but don't warp yet. Then the FC would give "activate warp" command, which makes everyone warp to whatever point they were "hot-aligned" towards.
This can of course just be done manually over voice comms, but lag makes it impossible to make it as coordinated as true fleet warp.

Now, why is that? Tell me how exactly would formations change the warfare in eve? Seeing as how you cant even hide your vulnerable ships behind bigger tanks because there's no collision detection for projectiles.
In some way formations are already being used... not that neat kind like in Homeworld 2.
What is the use of a formation? Basically to put your short range ships in front, your long range ships in the rear. FCs are already doing this manually by warping in two (or more) separate wings to the battlefield.
I agree, formations would certainly LOOK cool but they have absolutely no tactitcal value in eve (in my opinion)

If collision detection for ammo was introduced then hiding in a formation would become more than just Eye candy. However Formation flying does work well during a fleet doing an NPC mission.
For example: one of my buddies asked me and another guy to help him with a level 4 mission once. When we got to the last area we saw 3 swarms of ships; one to our left, one to our right, and one directly 12 o'clock. Each with at least 2-9 battleships. The objective was close to the central swarm with only 2 battleships. So we went into a Flying V, or Wedge Formation, with our largest ship (a cruiser) in front. The central swarm aggroed the point man first giving me; in my much faster, albeit smaller and weaker, Catalyst Destroyer just enough time to haul in and blast the objective and get out just before the other 2 swarms could blast me. We successfully completed the mission with minimal damage and got the loot and salvage from the 3 previous areas of the Mission space plus a mission complete and the payment for the job.
In this instance Fleet Formation flying kept us from getting the crud kicked out of us by 19 battleships and got us payed. If and only if collision detection were added to the ammo would this be any more than pretty looking. I actually hope collision detection is added. I would like to be able to use an asteroid field for cover. Yargh. I be SGT Funyoun. King of the Pirates!!! |
