It is extremely sad that CCP went ahead with this solution as it does mean that eventually BPCs and research of cheaper BPOs will become eceonomically unviable. In truth though, I think the BPC market has been declining steadily for a long time now for a variety of reasons.
With the BS BPC market in particular which has crashed more than anything else, I think it's in part due to a) the BiG Deal, b) the larger amounts of isk in the game and c) the increased cost of minerals making building more expensive. The first has made a much larger amount of BPCs available which means supply has gone up. The second means that more people have the BPO to copy, and the third means that the BPs spend less time in the factory and more in the lab. The three combined means there are a lot more BPCs available whilst demand hasn't changed a great deal, so competition amongst sellers has brought the prices down.
With regard to other BPCs, a lot more players in the game means a lot more builders which should mean increased demand. But I think more corps are slowly beginning to supply themselves and own their own BPs which means less need for BPCs. Combined with the fact most non-ship BPCs are sold as max-run, means less repeat buys. I have a Miner II BPC I bought months ago and have still not finished the runs on it...which means less sales for the BP holders and manufacturers, for example.
I used to make steady sales of various BPCs but now though my prices are the same, the sales are much slower. BPs make more money in a factory than a lab anyway, providing you can keep the mineral supply constant. I would really have liked a different solution to the lab slot problem, but eventually they will reach a price where I won't renew the rent, and in time other players too, so they'll probably stabilise at some point, though I expect it to be a couple of 100k's before that happens.
In the meantime, as long as you're making more from your slots than they're costing you in rental, then they're still worthwhile.
