Was wondering what is better or is it a question of personal preference? Keep your head down and keep moving!! |

i do see that there is a range issue between the 2. With blasters needing to be a bit more up close and personal. Keep your head down and keep moving!! |

Railguns are good at ranges above 9 km, and don't do as much damage as blasters.
Blasters do a lot of damage, but getting close enough to use them can be a problem.
When buying blasters, look for ones with 'Neutron' in the name.
This game is all about personal preference.

Thanks for the neutron hint. So many choices... I have been using railguns exclusively but wanted to try something different now that I can fly a Gallente Navy Frigate. Run some lvl 1 missions in that instead of my catalyst. Keep your head down and keep moving!! |

Blaster turrets are great on... well, frigates and interceptors, mostly. They have the lowest range of all turrets in the entire game, yet most Gallente ships aren't particularly fast.
If you're aiming for anything larger than frigates, I personally recommend going for lasers or projectiles. Then again, maybe hybrid turrets will finally get a boost at some point ł and you can't mess up training for hybrids, but... probably not the best choice. People will literally put projectiles on Gallente boats with hybrid turret bonuses, that's how bad it is.
If you're going for Gallente drone boats, though, you may have no choice. In that case rails are probably the way to go on anything larger than a frigate.

If you run mission you want to use rails on anything bigger than a frigate as otherwise you'll spend ages catching up with all the enemies before you're in range with blasters. For PVP you never ever want to use rails except for specialized fits designed for snipering, and then another weapon system might be a better choice. Blasters do the best damage in game but suffer from extreme short range and tracking problems. The ion blasters do lower damage than neutron but do have better tracking so might be better sometimes. A blaster fitted megathron can really ruin your day in PVP.

Rails have the longest reach of the turrets in-game. Damage is noticeably lacking, however.
Blasters have the highest DPS of the turrets in-game. In order to actually apply said damage, one must be at knife-range.
Blasters are popular in PvP for the massive damage to kill targets quickly before they can return the favor.
Rails are popular in PvE for the ability to kill rats from long distances before they can get close and apply *THEIR* DPS.

Edited by: Marko Riva on 28/09/2010 01:31:42 Just condensing the info a bit:
rails; good range medium dps bad tracking (they can't hit well upclose against a moving target)
blasters crap range high dps good tracking
So, the choice between them depends on the strategy you want to use in an encouter. If you get in close (or the target gets close to you) you want to use blasters. If you can/need to be at range then rails work fine.
Thing is that for PVE hybrids as a whole aren't really that brilliant. Blasters lack any sort of range and railguns don't do great damage, couple that with the fitting and cap issues most Gallente ships have and you end up with a ship that either has to move around a lot or does meh damage, in any case you'll have issues running a tank and your guns at the same time.
All that is kinda offset by the focus on drones which is a racial thing for Gallente. So you do less damage but you have more/better drones at your disposal but for pve at least this doesn't make up for it. For PVP things can be a tad different, as others have said a blaster boat does a ton of damage and if you are capable of getting in close to your target they'll feel the hurt. But, that head first strategy doesn't necessarily work too often.

In general, rails are good for PVE. Some rats will try to keep you at 20+km, so you could have a bad day if you are fit with blasters and are slow. 5 medium T2 drones do help mitigate that issue.
That said, I have a lot of fun running a blaster fit Brutix or Deimos in missions. You must use an AB to make it work and get some tank boost by speed tanking. My deimos gets 600 m/s speed, so chasing down the rats is not an issue. I even use the Deimos for L4 missions.
With medium neutrons, I get good DPS out to a 10km range.
Play with both.

No. No they are not. PVP is all about speed, kiting, and mid range engagements. With a blaster boat you'll find yourself out of range and being kited 95% of the time.
The Taranis is pretty much the only ship in the game that makes good use of blasters.
