I'm wondering on what happens when a tower goes offline either due to lack of fuel or manually switched offline by the owner. I asume every array goes offline as well.
But what happens with the forcefield, does that stick around, or can everyone just warp in and start nicking my anchored structures?

Yes, all the modules go offline, as do the shields.
Random people cannot unanchor and steal your modules. However, if they destroy the tower, all the modules automatically unanchor. Then they can be taken.
If you are in high sec, they will have to war dec you to take down the tower.

They can (And will) war dec you to blow up your modules to see if anything valuable drops, though :) So it very much encourages aggression. I'd avoid it, if at all possible. However, all research is simply paused, as are manufacturing jobs, and as long as you online it without unanchoring anything, research/manufacturing will continue.

Thank you for the replies so far. :)
The reason for me asking this is I was considering anchoring a pos in a system that has no stations but loads of asteroid belts, and use the pos as temp storage space for minerals. Hauling minerals to some other system in the middle of a mining op is just too annoying...
My plan was to have a tower and a hangar only, and only have them online, when I'm actually mining.
I guess I need to consider the war-dec, but since there will be no labs I wonder if it really is worth the effort to try and shoot it down. I'm however glad that agressors still need to war-dec me before taking any of the stuff.

Do note that a tower can go partially offline. If only the Liquid Ozone or Heavy Water run out, all the anchored arrays/modules go offline but the shield stays up.

Similarly, if you offline all the modules yourself, the tower will no longer consume any LO/HW. But it will still eat through everything else. ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

Correction. The forcefield goes offline, but the shields stay up.
If you have ever have to take down an offline POS you will find this out. Also an offline POS regenerates shields as well.
