OK so the book is nearly always better than the film version, but after responding to another thread I got thinking I would love to see 'Good Omens' made in to a feature length film. Pratchet tends to write his books with the big screen in mind. Chapters turn into scenes with cut fades between them.
Other books I have read that HAVE been made in to films include Catch 22 (wouldn't have enjoyed without reading the book first) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (ditto).
So what books would you like to see rendered on the big screen and why and how would you like to see it done?

I really regret not reading more in the past as I haven't read much at-all. One book that would make a good movie though is the The Watchman by Chris Ryan. An excellent plot, twists and action to keep people entertained. A good book although the more of Chris Ryans books I read the more I realise that he isn't that good of a writer as his books are getting too predictable.
Just on reading the Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum and I'm loving it, the movie was great but the detail in the book takes things to a new level.

"Snow Crash".
This is a movie that would absolutely require it be made in CGI.
It has everything, a turbo-charged customized pizza delivery car, sword fighting, a gatling rail gun. The finale takes place aboard an aircraft carrier with a refugee fleet strapped to it.
Why hasn't this been made yet? It deserves a trilogy! and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Brian Stableford: Dark Ararat
Would have made a much better story for a movie than Avatar. Although I would have liked Cameron doing it, that much I admit. Now that I think about it, Dark Ararat has some similarities.
Generation ships are sent out in all directions of space to find new homes for mankind, and the book follows the story of one such ship.
Also: the Foundation series
I mean imagine the huge Empire and the whole atmosphere. Unfortunately it has little action compared to trendy movie plots.
It could be magnificent. -SIG- Ship comparison |

Perhaps also Name of the Wind, although the likelihood of it being done correctly are slim to none. Peter Jackson could probably get it right, though.

I'd love to see a movie made out of The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi, Boneshaker by Cherie Priest or for a very brutal film, one based on Inversions by Iain M. Banks.

The rest of the Captain Hornblower books. Ioan Gruffudd had the part in the ones made so far. Now he is older he could slot right into the part again for the later books where the character is older.

I would love to see another movie for The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
They did one already, and it only covered about 1 (of the 6) book. While it did have a very 'hollywood style' (alternative) ending I DID like the movie and their interpretation of the books. The characters especially fit the mental image I had of them PERFECTLY (the black ford was so much better than the white dude they used for the series).
I believe THHGTTG deserves a 2010+ remake/sequel(s) as now more than ever they should be able to properly transfer the crazyness of the books onto the big screen.
I know I personally would love it, I know lots of other people would love it, and I can even guarantee that people that don't think they'd love it would love it too! __________________________________________________

For fantasy books I say I would love to see the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy put to the big screen.
For sci-fi I would love to see Consider Phlebas and the other Culture Novels put to film.
A few Terry Pratchett books have been put to film. I have seen the TV movies for the Color Majic and Light Fantastic but have not seen Hogfather or any of the other books that have been put to the screen in one form or another.

Mos Def played Ford and he is an exceptional actor!
I also agree that I would love to see more Hitchhiker books put to the big screen.

Also it MUST be in Documentary Format.
Start with video of some one talking like he's being interviewed and segue to "reenactments" of the scene.

I just got done reading House of Suns and Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds. But damn, I don't think they'd be short movies. They'd need several hours for all that content.

The "Night's Dawn" trilogy. But make it a TV series
The almost-60-actual-minutes-per-episode kind of TV show though (like those on USA cable or British TV), with at least one episode per chapter, preferably quite a lot more than just one where possible. Feel free to slightly scramble the simultaneity a bit for the sake of visual storytelling. That should easily be enough material for at least 3 seasons.
Too bad the budget for that one would make Stargate SG-1 look like a little baby (if you want to pull the CGI and everything else right).

Just waiting on the hobbit really,
If PJ has to do it again, its going to be all out, But i hope he dosnt, If some one could write him a small cheap bloody c grade slasher comedy like "brain dead" or meet the feebles, that would be awesome.
I liked the interpretation of colour of magic, but it doesn't quite get all the way into it. Ventari didn't quite meet up with my interpretation.
SO maybe Gaurds Guards Guards, Sam's one of my fav chars, but who ever played nobby could be type cast for life...

He'd better make a bloody good job of it, but I'm inclined to think he will. It's probably one of the only films I've been excited to get released and to watch in a cinema.
The TV adaptations of a couple of Pratchetts books have been really well done.
Alot of the stuff I'd like to see has already been mentioned. Nights Dawn would make an amazing TV series if done right, and only ran for the length of the books.
The Dosadi Experiment by Frank Herbert and Asimovs Foundation Arc would make good watching I think. Costume designers would have a fit over Asimovs descriptions though.
I'd like to see a good remake of Dune (and the whole Arc written by Frank), cell shaded animation a la Samurai Jack would be perfect, but I'll be in a grave before it happens.
