Some good places to explore: Jita, Rens, Amarr, Dodixie, Hek, Motsu, Arnon, and Oursulaert. ---------------

1) acquire latest eve quarterly economic newsletter 2) parse the included chart indicating the most-populated regions in empire space 3) use the in-game map to locate the most-populated systems in these regions 4) ??? 5) Profit!

All the trade hubs are circled in red on Ombey's 2D EVE Maps.
1. Jita (Caldari) 2. Amarr (Amarr) 3. Rens (Minmatar) 4. Dodixie (Gallente)
After that there are regional hubs which are mostly really mission hubs.
The Quarterly Economic Newsletter (QEN) often discusses them.

From what I can gather, Hek is tying Rens for traffic recently.

Competition from other traders has increased significantly the last few months. Perhaps the increased cap in Jita have made people move, who knows.

Amarr was my favourite for hauling to and from Jita when I was in that business.

Yup , not too far yet price difference on some items certainly make it a worthwhile trip.Used to keep my eye on ships and implants for inter-system trade between those two.

Traffic maybe, but are people just passing through?
Looking at the market history data for Heimatar vs. Metropolis on eve-metrics.com for a couple of dozen common typeids (ships, minerals, T2 modules, advanced materials, ammo, &c.), for every typeid I saw, traded volumes in Heimatar (incl. Rens) looked like they were twice as large as volumes in Metropolis (incl. Hek), even though there are many more solarsystems in the latter region.
Those volumes are not solarsystem-specific, but if Rens and Hek are indeed the leading trade hubs of those two regions, it seems that Rens is probably still significantly more substantial than Hek. á á

You're likely correct; I was mostly going on word-of-mouth information. I'm not sure how easy it is to sell things in Hek, but I do know I personally go there as often as Rens whenever I'm in the area.

When I traded, Hek was almost as in the butt end of nowhere like Rens is, with visibly worse ROI and lower volume. It's like Rens is the luxury quarter and Hek is the squat town. - Auditing & consulting

For what it's worth Amarr makes a decent destination for unloading regional purchases from mission runners, say large laz0r crystals or meta 3/4 beam/pulse guns purchased region wide from caldari mission w***es. (nice filter :ccp:)
Rens and Hek are stellar for contract purchases, I've moved a ton of **** from rens/hek to jita to resell for 10-20% markup.
