I didn't start playing eve until 06. I had the wonderful delight of playing swg and wow until then. I have seen the rise and fall of a lot of mmo's. So long as ccp doesn't remove the elements that make this a virtual world ran by virtual transactions it should be fine. 9/10 its the real world transactions effecting virtual ones that break a good game. There is a lot CCP has done so far to make eve one of the most unique games on the market. However to keep it alive and well they need to look at a few things.
-bugs
-lag
-features
-time dumps
-social interactions
Those 5 things make a tremendous difference in any mmo. And I have seen just one of those destroy entire communities. As for world of tanks, it is alive and doing well because of its demographic. That game has fallen so hard since its release you might as well call it a paraplegic in an iron lung. But it attracts the age group of lonely middle aged women. And young teenage boys. Everyone knows that is the mixture for cougar interaction. And that is precisely what CCP needs to focus on here. Bring in those cougars and teenage boys. You got yourself phat cybs in chat and a growing subscription list.
Seriously though if they improve upon those 5 things I stated I'm sure eve has years to come. They already have said they will not make an EVE 2 which is one of the smartest decisions when your developing an MMO. I just hope they see what is happening now and improve upon what is already working. (instead of adding an experimental and completely new system or feature.)

CCP needs to introduce a rage-quit option. Your sub ends immediately and you get any additional time you paid for back, but you cannot reactivate for 6 months. If you want to come back within that 6 months then you must pay a fine that is noted on your character sheet so we can all point and laugh at you when you come crawling back.
At EVE-Online we don't need whiny bitter players that feel they are entitled to instant action without any risk because they have played a long time. No easy mode ever, not even for people who have played over 7 years. Go play some other fail tank game or wow-in-space game with the rest of the babies, EVE was profitable a long time ago and we could always use fresh players who don't cry and emo quit because they are making a little less money from PI. Get out.

One thing I would really like to see is the actual number of players as opposed to the number of accounts.
IIRC there was a (perceived) massive influx of new players after Apocrypha and at some point those who are left
of these new players will have subscribed their second (and third, ...) accounts.
This effect could lead to the number of accounts growing faster than the actual number of players (which might very
well be stagnating/in decline).
How does this matter - an alt pays CCP the same subscription fee as a new player after all? It matters to
the players as additional alts don't increase the amount of human interaction (they just split it over more characters)
and it matters to CCP as a high saturation of the playerbase with secondary accounts results in this venue of
growth no longer being available to off-set future declines in the number of players.
You can grow your number of accounts "unorganically" this way for some time, but it will result in less revenue
per account (because many players will want to fund their secondary account via PLEX while the supply of
PLEXes is not affected by this measure -> less excess PLEX are being accumulated/stock of PLEX diminishes) and
it has to be replaced by "real" growth (in the number of actual players) after some time to keep the game attractive.
edit: imagine you are a car salesman - would you prefer to have one family which owns 3 cars or 3 families
which own 1 car each as your customers?
The family which already owns 3 cars is much less valuable to you than the 3 other families as it no
longer provides much opportunity for future growth.
