This topic got me wondering about old MMOs I used to play. I went and checked out the forums for Lineage2 and found out botting was such a problem and so many people quit because of it they had to merge like all 12 servers into 1 server just to have a somewhat populated server.

The reason there's less *****ing and whining about game balance is that most people figure out which ships are terrible and which are pretty much OP before they train for them. Also, there's no such thing as a fair or even fight in this game 90% of the time, so it's harder to notice balance issues.
But they exist... oh yes, they exist. Minmatar drones are far and away the most popular for PvP, Amarr drones are barely used at all, the ships people use in serious PvP are heavily skewed towards Amarr and Minmatar, there are many useless lower-tier ships in various ship classes, Caldari ships are still easymode for PvE, hybrid turrets in serious need of a buff....
This game is riddled with balance issues. But yeah, most people are smart and pick out the wheat from the chaff early on.

Actually, yes, I have. The game was EVE-online, circa 2005. Forums here have gone downhill quite a lot in the intervening years.

Sure I have. For instance when a game is just released, the forum is full of adventures and questions, not so much complaining. I've been member of a guild wars forum and there's still hardly any complaining (just checked), it's quite peaceful. Perhaps a game that's hard and dark and agressive also has a hard and dark and agressive forum?

Of course, during those intervening years:
- the game itself has grown steadily more top-heavy and newbie-unfriendly
- the veterans have become increasingly bitter
- a major developer scandal involving favoritism and cheating occurred
- there have been at least a couple of unpopular expansions
- the next planned expansion is already looking unpopular
- sovereignty changes made blobs and such even worse than before
- lag fluctuates but is always bad during fleet battles, no end in sight
- there are more bugs than usual right now; CCP says new features take priority over fixing them
- potential future plans (PLEX for remap, micro-transactions) have caused some unrest
- balance issues seem to be more prominent now than ever
There are probably more factors I've neglected to mention... and to be fair, the player base itself has probably worsened, too. However, if the above items had all been something positive rather than something negative, there would be far less *****ing.

You may be one of those people that prefers forums run by independant game sites to official forums run by publishers. There are a number of EVE forums run on dedicated fan sites and also some decent EVE sub-forums that are part of larger game sites. Try some of these:
EVE Vault
Gamespot
GameSquad
Ten Ton Hammer

EVE's playerbase is a little more... nerdy than most MMOs by a stretch from the people I've encountered. That lends a certain characteristic to the forums.
Overall, I have noticed that the general forum is becoming a lot more of a rage zone than it used to be (years ago when I peeked at EVE back then) but the overall playerbase still resembles what I saw back then - a lot of extremely techie people and all that goes with that.
The community is still better than every other MMO I've played. Kiddies don't tend to stick around and the ones that do fit right in with the rest of the techie types.
Besides, a nerd's rage is truly a sight to behold. I'm not sure why it is so much more dramatic but, man, can nerds seriously rage.

The MMORPG.com EVE forums are pretty decent. Not incredibly active, but they're more intimate and posters ù even myself ù are far less trollish there.
Also, former players and potential players can post there, which isn't the case here.
