I currently have a +3 implant in, I wanted to get the +4, same slot, but will I get 4 added to it or would the 3 be replaced with the 4, only giving me an extra +1 ? I ask because I tried to add a +1 after I did the +3 and it said something was already in the slot. So if it is all added together should I, when I do another attribute, go in steps of +1, +3, +4 ?

You have to manually unplug the current implant before you can insert a new one. So if you plug in the +4, you have to unplug the +3, returning that slot to 0, then plug in the +4, leaving you with a total of +4. --Vel

I'd say if you plan on using the +5 implants, to wait on the +4's and just get the 5's, or you will be spending a huge amount of cash to essentially buy both.

That or you have to get a jump clone somewhere.
When you create a jump clone you create an implantless clone.
So you can have several clones with different kinds of implants.
For example You can have one clone with all +5s for training one clone with +3s for 0.0 fleet work one clone with pirate implants for low sec work.
Catch is you can only be in one clone at one time, and you can jump clone once every 24 hours.
Also just in case you didn't know, when you get pod killed with implants, you lose those implants.

Just to make sure it's understood, as I didn't see it explicitly mentioned - when you unplug an implant - you destroy it. Same thing with Rigs on Ships. So - you want to think about it before you buy an implant - as it isn't like you can just unplug it and sell it to help pay for something better. That is one of the advantages of Jump Clones - is that you can have different implant sets without destroying them each time you want to change.
