After getting a new IP my clients crash all the damn time. I am convinced it is my new provider. I want to tracert the server and see whats up so i can complain to my IP company and give them some info.
Anyone know the IP address? (ex. 12.345.678.90) ------------------------------------------

ok cool thanks. Now I'm a noob with this stuff. Am I looking for it not to complete the trace? Does that mean it lost a packet? Or am I looking for just really long times on each hop? ------------------------------------------

If it times out doing a tracert, you're behind something blocking the IP, wether it's at your level or your ISP's is to be determined by your technical knowledge...heh...your ISP will help you figure that out, though. I would, but thats work, and I don't get paid to troll...I mean...help on forums.

If you don't know what you're looking for, Ping Plotter is what you want to use. It shows you both the route and the ping timeout of each node. Anything too erratic or in the red is a potential problem. - Paknac Queltel

Keep in mind that many routers will prioritise ICMP packets (ping, tracert) over regular network traffic, so tracert isn't the best way to test (although it is a start).
Also make sure you don't have any heavy uploads / torrents running on your connection.

One could always do tcp traces instead of icmp though to see if his ISP does any shaping.

Edited by: Cloora on 12/10/2010 14:58:41 Thanks! That Pingplotter is pretty awesome. Every so often I get like 10% packet loss in London or New York (I'm in California). But then even less often I get 30% loss over 4 differant hops locally. So now I got something iI can complain about.
Chribba what you said is greek to me. LOL
Forgot to add. So if I run a client on one computer and wait for it to crash with the pingplotter runnong on my other computer maybe I can see something right when the crash happens? ------------------------------------------

Yeah, that might work. It also might not. It's hard to say until you've done it and seen something odd. - Paknac Queltel

Keep in mind that packet loss shown on any hop that isn't the last one doesn't necessarily indicate a problem, because some servers prioritize specific types of traffic and are likely to drop your ping requests especially during high-traffic times. What kind of packet loss are you getting to TQ on just the last hop?
And if you're talking about crashing and not disconnecting, your internet connection likely has little to do with it. What message appears when the client crashes (if any)?
