The idea with drones is not to lose them, so the cost is really a non-issue. It's also a relatively small cost once you are doing level 4 missions, anomallies, whatever. And they are 'better'.

Is the huge increase in cost of the 44 magnum worth the increase in cost?
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

They get to the target faster. They're harder to hit, but have an easier time hitting other targets. They come back faster, if under attack. They survive more of a beating, as you frantically try to call them back.
àand that's even before we get to the oh so yummy DPS increase. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Is your ship worth more than the increased cost of the drones? If the answer is yes, then the drones are worth it. There is no better tank than a dead opponent.

QFT.
The DPS on paper doesn't seem that much better than T1 but they get so much better tracking and HP and for non-sentries also higher speed. Going from T1 light and medium scouts is a difference but not all THAT noticeable but going from T1 sentries to T2 is a huge increase in output. Can't use T2 heavies but judging from the increase in performance of T2 scouts and sentries I think they will be quite a looker.
Oh and for drone performance don't fully trust EFT. It doesn't take tracking and the higher survivability into the equation. That would hardly be feasible, too.

They have more DPS, optimal, tracking, speed, hp.
Yes, they're worth the increased cost. Just pay attention and stop losing them.

Edited by: Footoo Rama on 15/10/2010 15:34:32 I never loose drones, granted I have drone dura 5 and tend to fly ships with drone hp bonuses.
The t2 make a huge difference, sure if you just look at attributes they are not that much better, but remember drones are a heavily bonused weapon at least 3 skills you need to have will give a dps bonus to them... In addition the the t2 drones get the racial bonus skill, that training to level 3 is pretty fast.
There is really no reason why any pilot cannot use warrior II's and hammerhead II's with gallante drone spec to 3. It is not that long of a train.
Sentry II's are a requirement for 3 or 4 ships.
Heavy II's are very very niche and many gallante drone specialists still have not trained them.
Last time I checked hammerhead II's are below 500k isk in Jita, this not very expensive compared to guns or some t2 mods you have to have. ------- "Because the Dominix is the Chuck Norris of Eve!" |

Its hardly a unique question to drones. This signature space for rent |

...WHAT? have you ever seen a fail domi with t1 ogres? its sad. they die hard. they are far from niche, i would say sentry drones are niche. throw out being fancy, pos ops, or wanting to try to make an ishtar a sniper hac, you will find many more uses for heavy drones, even on non gallente ships. the gheddon and phoon HAVE dronebays and are helped very much because of it. Edit: or not

The question may not be unique but the answer isn't always the same.
For drones T2s justify the price difference, in the grand scheme of things they're much better than T1 counter parts and in general still reasonably inexpensive with a set of 5x T2 lights costing maybe 2mil or around abouts. Also unlike ammo they don't run out, they just get left behind or blown up.

Actually for some ships with only 25 m/3 like the drake, for PVP or Camps where you will often have to High tail it or get blobbed and warp out T1`s 61 DPS vs 80 DPS isnt that huge, Also the gap is smaller with less than lvl 5 skills.
The tracking and speed make the Warrior 2 Preferred to kill Frig/Tacklers.
But in reality split it and buy ECM Drones T2 Performance with a T1 Price and in a Drake is almost always the best option, You will Jamm a frig 33% of the fight for 20 sec intervals plenty of time for a warp out, or jamming a Logi ship with friends Drones grouped in small gangs etc.
Only thing Warriors are better for is gatecamps since you cant assign ecms.
All in all get T2 skills for MedDrones so when you fly ships with larger drone bays youll have it, but if you arent Gal or a Phoon/Geddon or Curse Pilot get ECM Drones first, then move to Drones 5/Racial 5 adv Drone interfacing 4. -------------------------------------------------- "If Eve Was P*rn, It would be a Snuff film, First you get screwed then you get killed" -Me

Warrior I... no damage Warrior II, every frigates bane
Ogre I... ok, decent damage and cheap Ogre II, still cheapish and omagawd thats some sexy dps
T2 drones are worth it, and the skills needed are almost certainly worth it for the extra damage

I'm gonna kick it up a notch and say possibly not for you.. If you consider the increase in cost 'huge' then you can probably get by on tech Is..
In general everyone should train up to t2 light and mediums and the only reason not to use them would be if you know for a fact you will lose them. Other than that, use tech 2. unlike normal t2 mods, the only drawback for drones is the price, no increased fitting etc. And indeed you can't really look at pure EFT dps figures since it tells you nothing about damage done over time. A flight of t2 hammerheads will often give you more damage then a flight of tech 1 ogres, simply because of less travel time and better tracking.
just do it Ignore me

Absolutely. And although the percentage increase in cost is very large, the absolute cost of them is very low.
Any PvP or PvE pilot should train up at least T2 light/medium drones as an early priority.

The Op as stated thinks T2`s are a big cost. ECM Drones for most PVP in Drake sized Drone bays are superior.
Can you really tell me ECM Drones are useless? You are stupid if you do. I told him to go for ECM Drones then work his way up to T2. ECM Drones are as effective in most cases as T2 Warriors for there purpose, which is usually to shew frigs away, but way cheaper. He will need T2 no doubt but if he is that poor or underskilled it might not be worth it for him, at this time. -------------------------------------------------- "If Eve Was P*rn, It would be a Snuff film, First you get screwed then you get killed" -Me

I agree ECM Drones for Cane/Drake are the way to go as once you get them skills dont matter, they have there base rates of Jamm and are as effective with a 5 mil sp drone user or a 500k Drone user except for range.
Go ECM First in PVP while you train up like the above guy said. Take what you Can, when you can. |

Yeah you are stupid if you didnt get what he was saying, he never once said it wasnt worth it, Rather for Drake or below in Drone BW its way more Effect at first to use ECM because it is way less skill intense and its way cheap, there is a reason 90% of the Solo/Small Gang Roamers in Canes Drakes etc use ec 300`s, They Rock. Period.
But I suspect you just read it wrong as you have been pretty good in the past Mut.
