Edited by: Cyprus Black on 17/10/2010 07:33:25 Not an exaggeration or a joke. I'm being totally serious. It's not a new mouse, however I bought it brand new a few months ago.
Anyways, after countless clicks today while messing with PI, the left button on my mouse ceased to work. Its springiness first started giving out then the electric contacts in the button itself stopped working.
I'm borrowing my roommates mouse for the time being, but I just found it funny and thought it was worth mentioning.
PI broke my mouse.

You're doing it wrong?
Try not clicking so hard, as enraging as extractors can be.

Edited by: Cyprus Black on 17/10/2010 08:23:09 Well, just to give you an idea on how many clicks I have to do:
I have six characters. Each character has 5 CC's. Each CC has around 21 installations. Half of those installations are extractors. Each extractor requires 4 clicks to get it running. This is done and repeated every 6 hours.
Doing the math... An average of 6,048 clicks per day is required to keep PI going. That count is not taking into consideration the amount of clicks required to get it all set up to begin with. Not to mention the 3 hours in total per day required just to do all this clicking, let alone doing anything else ingame.
If Extractor Grouping was implemented in the winter expansion, it would cut that figure down to around 480 clicks per day. That's roughly a 91% reduction in clicks.

Funny, I had a 29.99GBP mouse for about 6 years now. I played all kinda of games with it. I recently opened it and cleaned it but I never had any problems with it as in it actually breaking.

This is exactly the reason why they should double the amount of cliking needed.

Well, a typical mouse microswitch lifecycle is about 1 million cycle. If you've been hardcore diligent with your PI constructs, total mechanical failure chance increases after 1000000/6048 = 165 days ... that's about 5-6 months.
Yep, you should be able to thank Eve for that as the primary contributor, which isn't surprising really when you look at (god knows) how many GPU it burned by defaulting to un-throttled fps after install.
Replacing the microswitch is super easy if you've got soldering tools. The tricky part is obtaining the replacement microswitch which if you either need to hunt down the proper/similar model or cannibalize from a different non-working mouse.
As for mouse replacements, I'd personally recommend the average USB Logitech mouses. They're mechanically more solidly built than the generic brands (from microswitches and wheel construction) for a minor price premium ... I've yet to see one fail mechanically after going through several of them. The only problems I've encountered with my Logitechs are electrical/electronic issues .. some which was solved by replacing the elecrolytic caps in them.

Highlighted your two problems. Nobody is forcing you to do PI on all six chars. And there are longer cycles available.

I bought an $80 mouse with buttons out of the arse once. Two buttons for this, three buttons for that, and buttons you can't possibly find a use for or use effectively if you could. It lasted maybe a few months until it just wouldn't work the way it should. The buttons lost their springiness. But it just wasn't comfortable use anymore. I threw it in my "parts" bin hoping to fix it one day. Then I bought a wireless keyboard/mouse combo for half the cost of that overpriced PoS mouse. It was the same brand. Like it's overpriced PoS bigger brother the left button lost it's springiness and began making random clicks. So whenever this happens I take the $80 mouse, unsolder one of the working buttons and use it to replace a button on my current mouse. I'm on my third button. The second button quit working shortly after I setup PI for two characters.
*thinking to myself* Wonder if I can find a use for the laser on that $80 PoS?

My Logitech G5 still works like brand new after 2 years. Only the logo is fading on some parts.

Yeah you can go ahead and try swapping the left and right mouse buttons to even out the clicking thereby increasing the MTBF on the buttons.
Also mice can be bought off fleabay for like $5 US shipped, with the advent of USB you can have two mice and use one to move the pointer and the other to actually click.
How do I know this? cause PI hurt ma' hand.

Sounds more like your lack of a social life has broken your mouse. Also, if you absolutely must defy any kind of social interaction by playing a game with 6 characters, at least invest in a decent mouse.

I don't think PI broke your mouse. I've had the same mouse for 6 years. I spend an insane amount of time on the PC every single day, and I would imagine the clicks have run in to the millions by now. Mine's still going strong, and I've messed around with PI too, for a day, but then decided it's crap and pointless and no fun whatsoever and will never use it again.

I've never understood this whine about PI clicking. Invention has at least as much clicking...
Also, if your mouse broke doing something it was designed to do (ya know, clicking), it's either a ****ty mouse, or you're doing something wrong. It's not PI's fault.

Either option will work for you, but I'm afraid 3. is mandatory.

PI did not break your mouse.
The microswitches in a mouse will take over a million clicks before they fail.
Poor manufacturing quality broke your mouse. Since its only a few months old, it will still be covered under warranty. Get a replacement.

To put that into perspective, it's the same amount of clicks you would do in one hour of Call Of Duty 4.
Buy a proper mouse would be my advice.
