I noticed the self destruct but i've never actaully used it.
Does it cause area damage and if so what range and damage and is the range/damage affected by what ship your flying.
Also what is the destruct timer and will it destroy your pod asin would you need to eject and get to a safe distance before it went off.
I'm just wondering if it's a viable tactic in pvp if all is lost.

It just destroys the ship and modules, no aoe damage or anything.
and the pod does not get damaged from self destruct.
Its just a way of denying the killers of loot/killmail.

The timer is 2 minutes, alot of capitals do it to deny killmails.

You can also self destruct your pod. Can be used as a quick way of jumping to your clone system as long as your clone is up to date and you don't have any implants etc that you will miss, you then just have the cost of updating your clone once you get there.
Self destruct is viable in certain situations in PvP, I think it's primary purpose was to stop the really bad griefing that would come if people could just disrupt and pin you down indefinately with no chance of escape. Does get used by some people, particularly carriers, to avoid giving a killmail as when caught by pirates/small gangs/etc. they'll often be able to last the self destruct timer but not the battle.

You are forgetting the other use... when stuck in a wormhole, with no probes left and no way out. Your only hope then is either a kind soul finding you and helping you, or more likely, you self destruct your ship and pod, and are out of the wormhole back in station somewhere.
