To be able to do shortcuts properly, we saw no other option than discontinuing the current "set-chat-focus-on-any-key" functionality. Annoying as it might be for the chatty of you to begin with, this will by far be outweighed by the benefit of freeing up the entire keyboard, which has in a sense been held ransom by the chat focus functionality. Instead, there will be a special "set chat focus" command that can be bound to any key (SPACE by default).
This is how Perpetuum works, I HATE IT! HATE. IT. So many people lost mechs the police from having someone locked, and then thinking they are typing in chat "he is outside" - they would get "he" is out, but spacebar activated all your guns = boom!
So what I see happening in Eve is: Hanging about on a station, most people are on vent, some are not. Enemy fleet warps in. I type in an intel channel some info hit enter, then type some more without hitting space first "Get in fleet guys." or something to that effect, but T targets something, like the station I'm ready to dock in, and F fires all my guns. I see this change costing me a lot of ships.

It's excellent news, because now, you're no longer locked out of using 320% of the keyboard for more useful things just because of a poorly implemented chat feature. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

not at all, it is a matter of getting used to.
EVE is the only mmo i am/have been playing with this system. this system is too old and needs to go.
i can think of so many cool stuff with the system. truth be told, i am used to activate chat on <Enter>.

Yeah it will probably be good for most of the people who play Eve. Not for me because of...

My current ship hangar is not very forgiving, I will have to get more T1 BC to get used to it.
Also the thread title was quoted from the blog... I should change it.

Problems with your "problem":
1) The shortcut for "T" is to show info, not to lock target. 2) F activates drones, not guns so if you don't have drones, you don't have a problem. 3) You can change the shortcuts to suit your play style.

Awesome!
While you are at it, give the "local" intel tool an interface like the overview or the directional scanner, which uses less screen real estate and allows you to sort and filter stuff.
And make it possible to dd people in eve gate.
All this social stuff is getting in the way of actually playing the game. And all players who seriously need to communicate use TS or vent anyway.

LOL, thanks of your input. It was an example situation not meant to be technically correct. If you map the target and fire function to any sort of module off to A - Z, I'm pretty confident that I can construct a sentence that would both lock and fire.

...and if you go through the trouble of remapping your shortcuts to geting into that situation in the first place.
Just start every sentence with a space and you will be fine.

I suspect what they should do is what ALL other MMOs do.
Pressing Enter Re-activates the most recently activated chat screen. They could take it as step further like guild wars and allow special characters to be typed after enter to switch to a given chat.
Not that big of a deal. A whole bunch of Noobs will die when incursion comes out but then darwin will take care of the stupid people and the rest of us will get back to better business. *-------------------------* PoX IS Eve!!! BOOM!!! |

A better solution is to toggle.
For an example press spacebar for shortcut mode. Fly your ship around
Press spacebar for chat mode.
Everything automatically goes to chat.

The problem with toggles is that you need to keep track of which option is active.
Space always makes the chat window active. There is another shortcut (don't remember the default keystroke) that makes the overview active. This ensures that you activate the correct window and don't mistakenly toggle the focus away from where you want it.

Adding in real keyboard shortcuts might be even more awesome than the rocket boost and t2 ammo boost. Looking more forward to this expansion than the last one for sure. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. Unless you're too afraid of 'pvp grief' to do anything relevant |

I hopped onto the test server to give it a go. Its great! I also have not yet found a way for a Noob like me to do anything stupid (on default settings) yet.
It is nothing like the mess Perpetuum had where you have to hit the enter key before you type anything. If you are in the chat window you can keep chatting in the chat window after each line. Spacebar just brings up the chat window.
Feels nice, flexible and smooth, nice work CCP Optimal.
