So I use this to talk to select people but lately the updates have introduced nothing but tiresome fluff and invasive features.
Which make do I download and where and how do I custom it to keep it basic?

youll probably wont be able to do voice/video chat or some other stuff, depending on what client you choose..
i agree,, new wlm is crap :\

/me is busy still using WLM 2009 build 14. w/ MSN plus 4.
/me still has the downloader for said build.
/me is happy
/me enjoys using /me out of place.

If you mean the latest update, click on the switch to compact view button and it is pretty much same as it used to be. Sure bit different layout and stuff, but not more fluff or invasive features. (That is assuming you havent got it linked with FB or similar crap).

My least favorite "feature" of the new MSN is the removal of the block list

I hate everything about MSN now. The new login screen was the final straw.
Was reading about a pretty cool messenger someone is working on which will not only have all traffic encrypted, but will also store everything on the users computers, instead of all conversations having to go through a hub, and be logged/recorded. Wish i could remember the name, but it was featured on a few sites.

that is kinda stupid.. but they have added selectively appear offline to mode or something. Hardly the same though
