I am currently running a very small mining operation solo by mulitboxing 2 accounts. Currently I am mainly mining plagio, scord and veld (to fill out trit buy orders for steady ISK turn over). I have all the necessary skills to start an Ice operation but was wondering if it would turn over as much profit as the basic ore types I have been doing thus far.
My second account is working towards becoming an Orca pilot to maximise my mining potential and should be flying a fully maxed and implanted orca by mid to late november.
So in hisec is it worth getting some ice mining and supplying refined ice mats to market or is it just more hassle than it is worth ?

a)unless you got more than 4 hulks an orca is a waste.
b)no, it does not pay to mine ice.
c)get into a mining corp. |

Ignore the idiot who posted above.
Ore mining with an Orca/Hulk pair is a great idea. Tend to get ignored by can flippers. In fact, my Hulk/Mastodon combo worked fine for me.
Do not Ice Mine without a Mackinaw and Ice Harvesting V trained, and pair it with that Orca and it's descent ISK. Don't be AFK, but one can read online stuff or glance at the tube while ice mining. A little less ISK is the price.
Hope this helps.

Just something funny to add about the can flippers. A couple of days ago I was in a hi-sec ice field and watched a stiletto I think creep up on what appeared to be an afk orca and flip his can. Orca gave birth to 5 Garde II's. The end.

Thanks for the post
I am never AFK always reading forums using in game browser while waiting for laser cycles to fisnish and empty cargop to jet can for my 2nd guy to transfer to his iteron mark v.
I am never going to be one of these min/max get 4 accounts people. All I am interested in is setting up my own little business in my back end corner of the universe.
The end goal is to eventually use my own minerals in a little ammo producing business i am in the process of setting up. I have all the necessary researched BPO's, just need to start a better mining op to get steady stream of materials. Funding all my activities via selling mins currently but I know that this alone will not produce enough ISK.

The minerals I mine are free.

The minerals i mine are worked out at market costs when seting the price of the goods that are being mabnufactured with them. Economics 101. Nothing is free, and my time to mine them certainily ain't free.
So jam that post of yours up your ass

Ice harvesting is second only to station-spinning in terms of how unproductive you can be while logged in and trying to be productive.
I would highly recommend you build a spreadsheet indicating the ISK per cubic metre value of all the ores in hisec, based on trit/pyerite/etc lowest sell prices in your market. Then hunt down and mine only that ore which is worth the most per cubic metre, remembering that you can spawn limitless quantities of Scordite by farming up the level 1-3 mission "Break Their Will".
The catch with ice harvesting is that it is very afk-friendly, so many people will harvest ice while "AFK" and thus provide vast quantities of ice to the market. The profit in ice is very low, you're better off mining a high-value ore, selling the ore or the refined minerals, and then buying any ice products you need.
Short version: in hisec it is not worth harvesting ice.
As far as previous comment(s) about fleet makeup are concerned: Going by raw numbers, you end up being more productive flying an orca instead of a hulk when you get to a fleet of three pilots. As far as convenience is concerned, orca + hulk has immediate payoffs over iteron + hulk or two hulks. The people who claim you need four hulks to make an orca worthwhile are conveniently ignoring round trip time to drop off a full cargo hold in station, versus the ability to swap out expanded cargo bays for mining laser upgrades.

I also have 2 accounts and using a Orca and Hulk is for me the best. The cargo space or the orca is good to store - I can stay in space and no jetcan - just direct dump in orca and keep on mining.
When I am at the pc I usually mine Ore - with the boosters of the orca and mining crystals I can fill up the full cargo holds of the orca in 1h.
When I am doing the household (keeping the kid entertained) I mine Ice using the hulk and orca - gives me more time to do things while keeping eye on ice - It is a good income while doing other stuff.

Orca only has 50 drone bandwidth. So 5 gardes aint possible. 2 is.

Sure would be nice if posters here KNEW what they were even talking about before posting.
Drone Bandwidth has absolutely NOTHING to do with the number of Drones a ship can hold.
BUT, indeed, the Orca does only have 75 m3 of Drone CAPACITY, there fore can only hold 3 Garde II's, as they are 25 m3 each.
Indeed, there were no 5 Gardes out of that Orca, but this has nada to do with Bandwidth.

Yes: Sure would be nice if posters here KNEW what they were even talking about before posting.
Bandwidth has everything to do with the number and type of drones that a ship can field. The number of drones that a ship can hold is only slightly connected to the drones that it can field. If an Orca had enough bandwidth, it could field a full set of Gardes by scoping and releasing drones dropped by a friend. However, because of bandwidth limitations, it can only field 2 heavy/sentry drones, not the 3 heavy/sentry drones that would fit in its drone bay.

LOL. True. My bad on that with the drones from another ship. The point is, and we all agree, that 5 Garde II's did not come out of a lone Orca.
Thanks for the technical clarification.
