First TLDR: alliance leaders what are they like in rl?
------------
And then longer version.
I'm a working person myself and I have been playing eve for over two years. I hate anything that has to do with logistics and generally managing things due the fact I do enough of that in real life @ work. (I like pew pew!! and not having another work)
That lead to me this funny question, combined with the southpark idea of overweight nerds that are unemployed and spend all their waking hours playing MMO's. No offense.
So... What is the average alliance leader like?
-Pensioner with nothing else to do? -Working man /woman (30+)who manages RL duties (work, family, hobbies) and logs in to eve run the "firm" with cool head and clear vision? -Younger version of previous with just work to take care and no family (perhaps GF/BF and don't live with her/him). -"Something else" with no work and lots of eve? -Millionaire who don't have anything else to do? -"Kiddo" who has lot's and lot's of time to play eve? -Some rascal that has too much isk & time to spend and does it just for "lols" -Generally some ambitious person who's gifted with administrative skills? - ...??
I don't know any alliance leaders irl. I have known some corp leaders and that have originally been employees turned family men and ex-eve players when family size goes 2+ x or employees turned entrepreneurs and ex-eve players soon after that.
So I assume that no alliance leader is a entrepreneur and/or a mother/father of small kid/'s.

A student with above-average results (so that scholarships / grants / funds pay the bills) is another likely possibility. (Myself, although I'm not an alliance leader.) ___________ EVE is dying! Now for real! |

I sent an email at work and signed it with my pilot name. A bigger **** i have never felt.
My alliance leader is an emotionallly damaged unemployed man in his 30s who plays this game for 20 hours a day. The really capable people all have jobs/families/social lives so do not have the time to run an alliance

I know one of them being in his 30s, leader of a decent sized alliance, living almost 10 years off his government as he can't be arsed to find a job, playing almost 20h/day Eve.
When asked why he wouldn't get a job, the answer was that he has all the fun in his preferred game and his country covers for all the costs. So much about a social country in full decline. What he doesn't realize is that this same country won't be able to cover his costs forever...
Kinda sad really.

I am a 31 year old software developer working for a large, publically traded software company. I own a condo and am owned by a cat. I both got married and went on my honeymoon during my tenure as alliance leader. My wife is aware that I have a mistress named EVE, and has been very supportive. :) I work 40 to 60 hours a week and still go out to the club with friends on weekends.
It is quite possible to balance work and family with leadership of a large nullsec alliance. The key is to be a pro forum *****, live on Jabber at all times, delegate by default and assemble a crack team of dedicated, responsible, intelligent people to implement the policy you set. (PROTIP: This is the hard part. The even harder part is making sure all those capable, driven people don't kill eachother.)
It is not a job for the weak-willed, thin-skinned or faint of heart. -- Killed me? Read about it in my blog! Northern Lights: Solo PVP in EVE Online

I think the biggest victory of all is having your wife accept eve (office work is nice benefit and the knowledge of usefull gadgets).

Thank you all for good answers this far, please keep them coming.

This is actually a good question and something I have been curious about. I had a corp leader who worked in the Auto industry at a very high level. We met once and he showed me is work and my jaw was dropped at who he really was. Then I realized how he balanced serious EvE and a demanding job: No life outside of EvE. In his own words he was totally happy with his lifestyle. Sure he will probably be a bachelor forever, but his life is literally driving fast cars and playing sweet video games all day. I have mad respect for him.

Obviously his midlife crisis hasnt hit yet LOL, people who are obsessed with mmo's have the highest rates of depression, medical fact. Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona or content directly related to Eve Online. Spitfire |

I'm not an alliance leader my self, just a simple guy running a corporation (not too succesfull pvp wise, but with a bunch of happy and active members. Generally I'd say I acchieved my goal with it and I'm taking the goal I acchieved to the next, higher level.
And in real life - last year law student, living with his girl, often playing with her on the lap (she likes the ships blowing up), having a great social life, with above-average grades but not enough to earn my self a scolarship (so not top 3 students on the year, heh).
I imagine most people are more or less the same - got good real lifes, GOT A LIFE.

Sounds familiar. I was in a position of leadership for a good year at one point. Can't say I didn't enjoy it, but it's pretty ****ing hollow when you get down to the fact nobody actually gives a **** and you're leading pixels with your spare time (time better spent elsewhere).
Being a cog in the machine has its perks.
