As everyone knows, when you dock in a pod with no ship in your inventory, one of these four rookie ships are given out.
While I like the rookie ship safety net, I don't like having 60 Ibis' spread out across New Eden because I like to travel in a pod. I propose this:
If a capsuleer owns no ships, they are automatically given a rookie ship when docking in a pod; otherwise, they can request a rookie ship by clicking the option in station services.
On our end, less clutter- on your end, less database entries.

Thanks for the +1s on this. There should be more intelligence built into how these things are given away.

-1 How else am I going to go on epic velator roams if I cant dock and get a free velator wherever I go? Also, they make great cyno ships. ------------------------ Peace through superior firepower: a guiding principle for uncertain times. |

+1 less noob ships, I to pod travel quite a bit and a new damn ship each time I dock gets tiresome.. and my assets tab cries.

Thanks for that. There really is no downside to this. People can request beginner ships when they want, the rest of us are spared the hassle of cleaning up behind a poor mechanic

+1 - best idea I have read this year so far
I don't mind the free rookie ships that much, actually, but after a while having dozens of them scattered throughout the cosmos makes the Assets tab bloat. Yes, I can just trash them but I have a strong aversion to trashing things in EVE even if they are free.

If you want velators: Create Gallente alt, fly in pod from station A to station B, fly in Velator from station B to station A, repeat as often as needed, contract velators to main.
Nevertheless, your idea has some merit, subject to the reasonable restriction that the player's choice of rookie ship is limited to those that one can actually fly. If frigate is not of one's own race, it's not free; instead the player pays a modest sum such as 5000 ISK for it. The selection screen is not shown if the player can only fly one kind of rookie ship.
I have also envisaged a rookie ship selection screen in this thread where I proposed new cargo-oriented rookie ships and players can choose which rookie ship to receive.

Yes, but the entire point of having racial lines not affect your beginning skills too much is so you can make a caldari alt and be as capable as a minmatar alt. Unless you have access to the same equipment, they can never be same (like the consequences). Therefore, a rookie ship selection screen would be awesome

I had hoped they'd stop the insurance spam as well with the new mail/notification system, but it's not much better than the old system. If we don't keep getting spammed with rookie ships when we pod over to a station then we won't get the mails from Pend that go with them either :)

I always wondered where those things were coming from, and who was paying for them. It occurred to me that, RP-wise, some group had probably invested a ton of resources into helping the new capsuleer come into being, and part of that cost was insuring the noob ship safety net, and baseline insurance, were always there.
So what if you could forfeit those benefits in exchange for something like a stipend? What if you could upgrade them?

+1, with a kicker:
Allow options to: a) Get an ibis on request. b) Get a SHUTTLE on request. c) Stick with the pod.
Seriously. The first thing I do after going bang is opening the market: "Where's the nearest shutttle!? I gotta go to a trade hub! Afk! While peeing!" Nub-ships suck, and shuttles are cheaper. :)

Edited by: Rek Jaiga on 04/01/2011 07:35:49 I support this idea. It'll really reduce load times on the "Assets" tab, and in general help reduce the clutter on the database.
Plus if you could request a rookie ship at any time in station (even if you already have ships there) it would encourage people to be smart and scout ahead in something cheaper before transporting a ship/cargo worth much more (this is coming from someone who spends most of their time in low/nullsec mind you, so there could be a bit of bias ).
+1, or /signed if you will.

Shuttles probably wouldn't work here as they're a marketable item

Form someoing in infomation tech, i agree that it would reduce the server side lag by a lot if they did that. Give a option to ask for on at a cost if we have over like 1m sp. That way it would save a lot of server resources if that happened. I may be young, but i will still fight for what i belive in. |
