Is it possible to probe for a cargo container? I know they show up on directional scans but...?

You can try warping back and forth between bookmarks with the container in between. Keep dropping bookmarks in each warp and make constant adjustments as you get near the container. Once you get within a few thousand km of it you can easily fly to it with an interceptor.
I did this one a few years ago, it took me about 30 minutes and the container was empty when I finally found it :( - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

No you can't use probes to find it as someone else mentioned you can (if you have many bookmarks in the system) fly around all day using the D-scan to get the bearing and keep flying around narrowing it down until you eventually get to it and in all likelihood it will be password protected and probably empty.

Neither core nor combat probes will scan down containers.
You can see them on your Directional Scanner.
You can get a bearing on them by narrowing the degrees the scanner is scanning by moving your POV around your ship in the horizontal plane and up and down in the vertical plane.
Next - you are dependent on having a book mark that is at least somewhat in line with the container. If you don't have that or a celestial you cannot go over there. At one point in time - I was informed - we could modify the xyz coordinates in the create a bookmark function - but that was removed by CCP. Thus, you are dependent on having mission or exploration spaces you can warp to and create book marks at to randomly populate your system with book marks. In combination with celestials and your bookmarks you can also warp between them dropping bookmarks along the way.
If these methods can give you a bookmark that is in line with your target - you might be able to get to it. If they don't you're SOL.
Once you get a warp point you can warp to in line with your object you can begin warping back and forth along this line dropping bookmarks until you get one close enough that the target is on your over view - at this point you can bookmark it and warp to it.
Things you can do to expedite the process involve adjusting your cap so that it will run out at a certain distance - this will allow you to warp a specific distance.
Then you can - while having isolated your contact to a 5 degree scan - adjust the distance of your scan until the target drops off of it - then continue to work the range until you can adjust it by a small amount and have it appear or disappear. This is approximately the range to the object.
At this point - run your capacitor down to a level that will warp you to near that distance and warp in the direction of the object. Continue this process until you get the object to appear on your over view.
Now ... I've never actually done this to completion ... but after it came up last month or so ... I did go fool with it to the point where I figured I could have completed the process if I really wanted to.
This last is the biggest problem - in that it is fairly tedious and entirely dependent on where your warpable objects are.
Now ... Ninja Salvagers - who are after wrecks which also can't be probed down either - probe down the mission runners SHIP and warp to THAT, at which time if he has any wrecks nearby they've "found" them.
