I have 10mil sp. I play with relative frequency. I'm self sufficient. I have a few billion isk saved up. I've run countless missions. I've popped and been popped dozens of times in my crap-fit rifters. I've had my implants mashed to powder a few times exploring nullsec (thank you morsus mihi, your gate camp was truly awesome)...
And yet I don't feel any more ready to join a corp than day 1. I've still got a hundred or so days of core skills that need to be at V in order to properly fit a t2 battleship/hac (which seems to be the gold standard of most corps) and that's to say nothing of the scanning, ewar, and various other science/electronic skills for other ships that some corps want me to have (dictors, hics, recons, covert ops).
So what do I fly in the mean time? I have isk and I have time, but I don't have the skills to make myself appealing to any corp worth my time. I don't fancy the idea of just flying around in a t1 rifter for another six months while I wait for my time to remap for guns and ships.

-Gank someone with a dessie -Talk with other players/shoot the **** -Join and scam a corp -T1 cruiser pvp (arby and vexor are great for this) -Join FW (total **** in my opinion, but lots of players rave about it) -Join RvB -Start playing the market (requires less than a few days of skills to be effective) -Explore regions you havent visited -Run the various complexes around highsec -Ninja salvage -Troll forums (you might be doing this one already...)
[All of the above can be done with low to no sp investment]

And with that attitude, you never will. If not having all relevant skills at L5 is what's stopping you from "getting it on with the big dogs", some other reasons will come along later... like "oh, my clone got way too expensive, I can't afford to get podded" or "I don't want to clonejump to an implantless clone" or "damn, this ship is so expensive that if I lose it I'll kick myself" or "these guys are not good enough for me, I'd rather train for capships and join somebody else better" or whatnot else. Go for it now, or don't bother hoping you ever will.

This. By the time you have 10M SP, you need to be showing that you're willing and able to apply them. If you have multiple billions of ISK in cash reserves then there's literally no reason that you cant join a corp and start pewing. If you can use T2 medium guns, then that's enough by any reasonable standard.
Malcanis' Law: Whenever a mechanics change is proposed on behalf of "new players", that change is always to the overwhelming advantage of richer, older players. |

May I ask how you know that those corps are worth your time without joining them?

This. Lots of corps recruit players of your experience ...

Don't think much about corps just try them out. I was in 0.0 with 3 million skill points. Granted it wasn't the best alliance in game but I was learning something and having fun flying in gang instead of sitting in empire getting bored to tears. I could fly an interceptor at that point and had about 100 million to my name and got easily accepted.
Thing is that corps that are "worth your time" are not going to take you without solid killboard history, some corp history and references. In eve the actual gaming experience matters more than your skill points and T2 fitted battleship combined. By waiting too long and not building up your eve history and contacts you're doing yourself a disservice.

What the hell has having level 5 skills got to do with joining a corp. Should have joined one as soon as you started playing.

If you're waiting to have the "perfect" combination of skills for a particular corp you'll be waiting a long time.
Go find one that does something you're interested in doing, and apply the skills you have. If you can fit and fly a decent tackle frigate, you're useful to any PvP corp, especially if you can lock and tackle those pesky pods before they can warp off. --Vel

My corp isn't recruiting at the moment, but the ability to do defensive PVP in a T1 tackler frigate, such as a Merlin, is otherwise welcome.

Edited by: Skex Relbore on 08/11/2010 16:01:19 Yeah I agree with the general consensus here. Don't wait for skills just work with what you have in the mean time.
I do however suggest trying RVB and not just because I have a vested interest in being a recruiter. It will get you out of station and into some fights. You'll get over your fear of losing ships and get past the combat shakes so you can actually be effective during a fight.
Do that for a few weeks or a month or so then you'll build up some killboard stats and get a little experience working in fleets and if you have the gumption flying solo.
You'll also get the chance to make some friends who can help you find where you want to go afterwards.

One more thing, to the OP:
If you want to join a corp that lives in 0.0 (which my corp does not and never will do), then for your own sake you need some skill so that you can have fun in 0.0 space. I lived in 0.0 space in another corp, for a month or so, some years ago, and it wasn't fun at all, because I didn't have any skillz to have fun out there.
I couldn't fly anything larger than a cruiser. No BC (nor BS), no mining barges. I had good support skillz, but could not rat, and could not mine much in my Osprey. At best I could salvage for other ratters, or haul during mining ops in an industrial. Or if there had been a lot of PVP I could have flown a tackler frigate. But there wasn't.
For your own sake, make sure you have something fun you can do in 0.0. At least being able to fly a mining barge or a BC, unless your corp does frequent mining ops (then you can haul for them) or if there is lots of PVP (then you can have fun in a tackler frig)

I started really playing in 2007. I have never flown a HAC, or a t2-fit BS (in fact I can't even do the latter), and I've never -not- been in a corp.
Your impressions are just...wrong

True, actually. I trained up HAC V but have never really had enough spare cash to justify blowing 150 mil on a single ship. And as for BS...Never bothered training up the skills. I've used BS for a very minor amount of ratting and for ganking missionrunners in hisec.
Everything else I fly is t1/t2 frig or t1 cruiser.

Over four years and a half, over 82 mil SP, and I'm still trying to avoid training BS-only skills to L5 I guess I'll eventually give in and train some of them to L5 eventually...
P.S. I've almost never flown BSs on TQ. _

Well, I can understand it if you live in empire (to some degree at least). That said, i've been in nullsec almost six years and i'm pretty sure i'd /wrist if I had to fly a dictor or ceptor all the time. Not to mention the huuuuge boon of having a farming carrier.
