Honoring ransoms makes business sense for a pirate. If you expect to make ISK through Piracy honoring ransoms promotes paying ransoms.
Honoring 1v1s is a pretty pointless endeavor. It turns combat into a game. A bloody melee and a jousting tourney are two separate things. Piracy is more geared toward the former than the latter.

Add Cryloud to the list of those who usually use a little help from 4-5 rr bs while doing declared 1v1.
Happy to see Dame Death is still alive. I wonder if the character owner is still the same (that would be nice).

Edited by: Quendishir on 10/11/2010 15:29:00 I honor 1v1s and ransoms. There's my own reasons.
Ransoms are honored because it is a valid source of income. While I do carebear as well, the ransoms pay rather well, and I'd rather not earn the reputation as a "********" because I don't honor ransoms. Also, I'm fairly certain my name would end up here, followed by Python Cartel finding me in low sec to blow me up. =X
As for 1v1s, those get honored as well. Win or lose, I just want a decent fight and you don't normally get those in low-sec. Hell, null sec is impossible for decent fights. Whoever brings out the biggest blob wins. I prefer the good ol' SAS motto: "Who dares wins". I take a chance every time I go out in a ship and fight. I've always got a gang on standby complete with logistics and ECM, just in case someone else doesn't intend to honor it. Hell, my corporation knows if I'm engaged in a 1v1 and they attempt to intervene without my request, I will pod them myself. And I mean it.
EDIT: The ransoms and 1v1s I've seen from Jerk Cartel have all been honored. Then again, I've only seen it when it comes from Python Cartel, no one else in the alliance.

Edited by: Sjugar on 10/11/2010 16:21:21 From an economic point of view:
If you want to maximize profit as a pirate, you ransom someone and then you shoot his ship and get the contents. (and get a kill-mail, but that's hard to express in ISK.) For people to even pay a ransom they need to believe that the pirates honor them.
So, for maximum profit on the long run, as a pirate you have to convince all other pirates to honor ransoms while you don't.
To recap, I don't think much responses in this thread will be: "no I don't honor ransoms". Because if a pirate wants ransoms people need to believe they get out with their ship intact.

I always honor mine.
That said I hardly ever enter into 1v1s simply because most other people don't honor them. Ransoms I usually only offer to complete noobs. I think the lowest ransom I ever offered was like 10,ooo ISK. With juicier targets I simply prefer the mail.

I meant pod ransoms, because they might have some implants they don't want to lose.
I never ask for ransom when shooting a ship unless they make a crazy offer.

We Bastards and the Tuskers can be added to that list as well. We honor all ransoms, 1v1's, and basically anything one of our guys or gals says they will do. Case in point we recently ransomed a chap in a Hurricane for 25Mil, but he did not have it. I offered that if he ejected I would take the ship as is and contract it to him for 25Mil for 3 days and if he did not pay in three days we would take the ship. The ship itself turned out to be worth about 80Mil in mods with all the Meta 4, but true to our word we did exactly what we said we would do.

I've been in piracy since 2004. Let me explain the counter argument.
Honoring ransoms can reflect good on you in the long run. But, it can also reflect good on your competition too. The more ransoms you honor, the more you help yourself and others just like you. On the other hand, honoring ransoms does not mean everyone in the galaxy will notice. The chances of every pilot in EVE knowing you didn't honor or that you did honor a ransom is very limited. So you should know that even though a handful of pilots knows you didn't honor a ransom, doesn't mean everyone else knows you didn't honor the ransom. Word does get around, but not at that speed or magnitude.
I don't honor ransoms anymore because it's a distraction to what's going on. Not being able to detect if a ship has faction mods on it or not is also another good reason why you should never attempt to ransom ships. That's why most ransom pods now-a-days. Ransoming a pod can't be done on the way to destruction and thus, I don't honor ransoms anymore.

Two problems with your accusation.
1.) Quendishir and Aiden Vorlan have never been used in tandem for ganks. Mainly because when I use one, the other is probably probing.
2.) Aiden Vorlan hasn't been used in over a month, as he is a now-defunct character.
Oops.

I honor 1v1s. However I do not think a 1v1 means both people fight without any tackle until one or the other dies. So when I fight in a 1v1 I expect that I have to keep my point on the other guy if I am winning and he needs to do likewise. That is unless it is otherwise agreed.
I would however never agree to a 1v1 where both sides are supposed to stay on grid until one dies. You just get long range fits that way and people don't even fit a point.
