Edited by: Lance Tyr on 10/11/2010 15:41:09 I've always wondered this. It seems it's very rare you'll find a 2003 but there are always a couple 2006's around. Personally I'm a 2005 and only hang out with a couple people I met when I first started the game. If I had to guess I'd say only 10% of the playerbase is now a 5 year old character with significant SP's (70 mill+)

Killed a 5yo character last night. He joked with us later he had logistics who was so afraid to lose his ship he refused to rep and jumped gate.
Older players seem.pretty cool.

My main is a 2005, and everyone i know online now only started playing in the last year or two.
The turnover rate is very high, and instead of trying to do something about it CCP puts all their effort into new selling points to get fresh customers in the door. I'd be interested in knowing the average time a player sticks around.

I have been playing since 2003 and with the same character.
Hardly any of the people I started playing with still play and if they do its mainly with a new character that they have created.

2006 player here on a soon-to-be-inactive alt. The player demography was actually shown in one of the "recent" QEN before Tyrannis. The percentage of old characters is, or better was, rather high for an mmo. But they were still outnumbered.

Im 5 years old in 23 days.
Playing one online game for half a decade.. Thats weird, but EVE feels more like "home" now rather than just a game...

August 2005 here, most of the players I know are older but know a few younger ones. I don't see a lot of turnover of older players, less frequent at logging in, probably due to those longer skills.
20M short of that 100M barrier SP wise. Money is still a little low though . I put it down to "experimentation"
Perhaps we should have a "Gentlemans Club" when WIS is released, with limited access to old timers

In 2008, City of Heroes reported that the average sub length was 17 months, a number that caused them to be "pleasantly surprised". http://www.vg247.com/2008/02/14/ncsoft-europe-ceo-new-city-of-heroes-titles-planned-aion-for-q4-2008-release/
With the growth of F2P, the proliferation of options, and the "buzz" that new games create, I would venture to say that current averages are substantially lower.
I believe I have heard 6-7 months bantered about for MMOs generally, although I cannot find a source atm.

I mean that I am not on it, and I can think of at least 10 others who are not on it, and should be.
So - very incomplete = pointless.
edit: its like the rich list that appeared here recently, which more or less says that 5 bill gets you into the top 100 - pointless. |

Hey, numbskull, do you have any idea how that site works ? Let me explain it to you : YOU have to ADD YOURSELF there, by entering a valid limited API key. So of course "Cruachan Argylle" is not on it if you haven't manually added him.

Because the one most important reason for people to go up on eveboard is to show off their pilot age, RIGHT ? Older people have an incentive to go up there for bragging rights or to have characters sold, but after a character gets sold the API changes, so the new owner would have to put it up again. Older people might also be paranoid about having their stats publically visible and be unaware they can hide them. Relatively newer people have much more of an incentive to use eveboard, so that other more knowledgeable players can direct them to whatever skills they should train next, but then again, quite a few really new people don't even know about the site (but somebody will eventually point it out to them). So, if anything, the list is probably slightly more likely to be biased AGAINST older characters. The most likely scenario however is that the list is not significantly biased towards any specific EVE age group.

So if that was an accurate representation of the larger EVE community that would be right around 12%. I was close in guessing then :P

So, it is then somehow your claim that the percentage of now-active characters created before the year 2005 ended (3546 out of 23229 on that list, so about 15%) is noticeably lower or much higher than 15% ?!? Like, oh, say, under 10% or over 20% ?
P.S. From the tone of your post, I will be assuming you want to claim something closer to the latter, namely that the percentage is higher than 20%. Well, back in late 2005 and early 2006, the game had slightly over 75k subscribers, so even if ALL of them maintained an account, given the current 350+k subscribers, that would still mean at most around 22%. For you to be right, the number of people from before 2006 that are still playing needs to be around 90%, so basically almost everybody.

I created a character in 2004 and played for a bit, but I screwed up my attributes at character creation and biomassed him around xmas 2004 iirc.
Decided to give EVE another try in June 2005 and apart from a bit of inactivity here and there (mostly in 2008 and 2009), I've been here ever since.
Only 2-3 people still play from my past, but I was happy to find out an old RL friend I went to school with, and haven't seen for 10 years, started playing about 8 months ago. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ooooh, I'm number 78. Kinda odd it shows my character birth being 4 days after launch like that though, I started on day 1. Actually there were a lot of people who started on day one that had their start day bugged later on. If you look up my employment history, I don't actually have a starting NPC corp listed either... Once got asked if I was a Dev because of that.
Definately need to go bug number 79, Walkin. He was a director in my corp for many years.
