119 people visited this thread and had no idea what you're talking about.
I also didn't, and assumed a spaceball 5000 was some kind of sex device, until i googled it. Turns out it's like a mouse with a large ball which is supposed to make navigating in 3-d easier, somehow.
Does it work? You'd probably have a better idea about that than any of us. But i am curious how well it works in games it does.

Edited by: David Carel on 15/11/2010 07:16:51 It's pretty awesome for 3D scene navigation. Actually... EVE in one of these VR cages... now that'd be awesome.

Tried to once but to no avail...
I had thought it could be really good for videos, with Fraps mapped to the thumb buttons and much smoother zooming and camera rotation it looked like it would be ideal but the best laid plans... |

well i use it in autocad and being able to move a item around like you can with it is just flawless, thats why i was hoping someone had came up with a way for it to work in eve. and ya i guess i could have linked the controler so everyone know what i was talking about but i figure ppl who knew the name on the post would get the idea.

Edited by: SFX Bladerunner on 15/11/2010 18:14:53 Edited by: SFX Bladerunner on 15/11/2010 18:11:10 I can tell you now, without googling what the hell that 'spaceball 5000' of yours actually is, that it will have no real added value over just a regular mouse+keyboard.
EVE is a very point-and-click heavy game, which for now still handles best with a mouse (perhaps in the future we can use eyemovement detection, hell, we could today... but meh)
Now something like X3 (or comparable flight-sim) your spaceball might have an added value where there are multiple axis for multiple things (vision x-y and movement x-y) it might be handy (perhaps in combination with a joystick?).. but eve just has the 1 axis (camera x-y) and relies on static x-y clicking for commands (and shortcuts obv)
EDIT: scratch all that, apparently it's just a trackball.. I thought it'd be a mouse with a trackball on top?...
Wait... wtf was I thinking in the first place
ANYWAY, to rephrase all of that: If you find navigating windows/osx(/linux?) easier with your trackball than with a regular mouse, YES you will prefer playing EVE with it over a regular mouse.
ALSO, I just saw this: http://www.3dconnexion.com/products/what-is-a-3d-mouse.html
And that movie made me want to get one too, and I don't even do ANYTHING graphical, just raw programming __________________________________________________
