(Note to any Bigots: I have NO faith. But I don't let that make me hostile to people who DO have faith.)
This issue is one of the reasons that the Catholic Church is LONG over due for revisiting the Gregorian Reforms of the 11th century (not to mention the various councils and and such from preceeding centuries on the same subject....)
During the 11th century and eariler, there were excellent reasons for concern about married Priests, or worse, Bishops and above, that simply no longer apply in today's world.
The result of the existing policy is that a large number of very good men are infiltrated with a tiny but very damaging number of evil men, but because ALL of them have to deal with self imposed sexual denial, it provides cover for some, especially if they are not investigated. (NOTE:this is seperate from the gay issue. there are gays in both the evil and good groups...)
Add to this the long standing policy of forgiveness if there is repentence, and if internal discipline gets to soft, things get ugly (and have gotten ugly)
What I'd like to see:
--A change in policy so that repentence of sexual infraction against minors gain ZERO mercy (other than forgiveness of the spirit) --Actively turn over preps to the secular authorities, or bring back some of the old HARSH church punishments (the issue of turning ANY priest perp over to civil authority is its own debate, and is over a 1000 years old....)(yep, I no joke STRONGLY approve of filth like the child **** idiot getting burned at the stake...) --Allow priests to marry, even bishops. Do this and those who have 'issues' will stand out more clearly. Those who's "issues" happen to evil can then be purged (harshly I hope...)
Play nice while you butcher each other.

It's not specific to priests. People from all walks of life are involved in such crap. Postmen, policemen, teachers, poiticians, rabbies, film directors, tax administrators etc.
You really should watch Dateline NBC's series 'To Catch a Predator'. There are some hilarious catches. E.g., the rabbi and the policeman.
There was only one guy I felt sorry for. Some 18 years old guy who went to see an allegedly 15 years old girl. I mean that's hardly pedo. Basically a victim of circumstances.

This
For people who dont 'get it' it IS religion, being raised to believe that sexual urges and all things sex are bad (except missionary in marriage) will screw you up.
Oh and yes people out of religion do this too but have equally been raised bad

Yes the Catholic church provides a haven for a few deviant sexual predators, and they make me sick, but to think that this is a problem associated with just religion, and the Catholic Church in particular, is bordering on the line of ignorance about the problem of sexual predation of children.
A majority of children that suffer form sexual abuse suffer at the hands of a family member. Just keep that in mind when you have kids.
By a freak chance I was at my parents home yesterday and after cleaning the leaves up I turned on the non cable TV and waited for them to get home. I watched Opra and the episode was about men and then coming out about being sexually abused as children. Most of the guys I heard were molested by a family member and only one of the 6 people I know personally that have been sexually abused was abused by one of our priests. Unfortunately, he was the one that could not handle it and killed himself before his wife died from terminal brain cancer. One of them was molested by his mother, and one of them has not told me who, but I suspect that it was their brother that did it to them. So this is a sick problem that is not isolated to one segment of the population.

Depends how much you believe writings of Saint Paul. I think hes mostly full of crap, some people just take that leadership of a church should be 'married to god' while others just hate sex in general.
I agree with the idea that sex and relationships can distract a religious person from their practice and devotion, but if this is the crap that comes from it then it needs to stop.
And seriously? 600 gb of cp? Thats an unhealthy amount of normal ****, let alone cp.

As I stated above this is not a problem with celibacy, this is a problem that runs deeper within communities. Until pedophilia becomes a statistically significant issue across all theologies that adhere to the concept of celibacy then I will not hold a single religion accountable for the atrocities. Most child molesters are not of the ilk that would dedicate themselves to religious practice. It is sick when a person in such a position of power takes advantage of children like this, but it is not even close to describing the majority of pedophilia cases.
Priests that commit acts of dominance over children will likely not be reduced if celibacy is revoked. It may dilute the prevalence since you may see an increase in 'normal' sexual practitioners entering the priesthood, but it will not eliminate it. Just do a search for sexual preditation in the Protestant church and you will see that it occurs at similar rates as in the general public.

I can't help but think that people have it the wrong way round; It's not that celibacy in itself causes mental issues (although as we're 'hard-wired' to procreate, suppressing that can give rise to problems), or that the church somehow encourages this bad and unwanted behaviour.
I'm wondering how many men who figured out at a younger age that they were "different" regarding sexuality, be it gender or age related, tried to cover this up and hoped to "cure" themselves. Turning to the church and celibacy to suppress their problems and hoping to find 'redemption'. I really can see that happen a lot.

Heck I have 338gb used on a drive for ST: TNG, DS9, Enterprise, Stargate SG1, SG: Atlantis, the SG movie and the two SG1 movies. and I still need to rip Voyager. id likely blow out a 1TB drive on just Voyager if I didnt compress with mp4.

its also why people need to encrypt their WIFI, because the people that access CP also likely share it. And if they send it over your insecure wifi guess where the FBI/Police(or insert your local or national equal here) come knocking.
