Very small asteroids pass close by Earth and even land on it or burn up in the atmosphere regularly. I find it unusual they're announcing this.

It happens far more often than announced. Kind of like announcing every 10th, 100th, or 1000th car passing on the freeway.

And never for an extremely small one, that i've seen.
Perhaps they're just showing off they spotted one? Larger ones are obviously easier to find, and they still usually see those shortly before they arrive, if at all. Can remember a few times in recent memory there were stories about large ones coming closer than the moon which were only reported after they passed.

According to this article about two asteroids buzzing earth in the same day....
Quote: Astronomers estimate that a small asteroid like 2010 RF12 and 2010 RF30 passes between Earth and the moon every day.

Originally by: Space.com one goal might be sending humans to purposely move an asteroid, to nudge the space rock to change its trajectory. Such a feat, he said, would show that humanity could deflect a space rock if one threatened to crash into the planet.
