How do you guys feel about hunting animals, the main reasons for hunting are the following (in no specific order).
1. Fur 2. Meat -> Food 3. Epeen 4. Income -> Carpets etc 5. Medicine
Personally I dont approve of any harm (physical or mental) to anything from environment to animals to insects to plants and people need to be efficient if death is necessary (eating healthy means eating fruit / veg and not Fugu for example).
Hunting yay / nay?

Complicated topic.
Are we talking about age of refrigeration? Where food does not spoil for months or are we talking about third world country where killing chickens every day is how you get meat in your stew?
Vegies will spoil too, by the way. So 100% vegetarian diet is not a solution.

Yeh I kind of rushed the topic, I was mainly thinking about Polar Bears and Lonesome George while I was typing this, I would really hate to see them go :(
But this question is really for animals that dont have a conservation status, yet!

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.
Sure I could spend a couple dollars and go to the store for a steak, or I could spend a couple dollars on a bullet and fill up my freezer for 2 years. I personally like the part where I string em up to a tree by their hind legs and slash their throat. Then I howl at the moon and dance around the carcass naked while I cover myself in blood.

First of all... I feel that there is a vast difference between hunting Deer/Elk/Game birds, and hunting Polar Bears.
Polar Bears are very threatened currently, while the populations of Deer and Elk are rising exponentially. A few years ago in Colorado, USA, the park service issued hunting licenses for the sole purpose of reducing the Elk population.
For animals that don't have conservation status, I say go for it, but then again, whenever I hear the slogan PETA, the first thought I think is "People Eating Tasty Animals".
Animals that have conservation status shouldn't be hunted, and only killed if in defense of a human. In the case of Lonesome George, anyone who kills him, deserves to have all manner of 'cruel and unusual' punishments inflicted upon them.
(On an unrelated note, I've actually seen Lonesome George in person) ------------------- "Do you know what the chain of command is here? It's the chain I get and beat you with until you understand who's in rutting command here!" -Jayne |

You can do all that with one bullet?!

6. Preserve ecological balance since our ancestors killed all the natural predators (e.g. deer). Also preserve biodiversity - see all those little copses and hedgerows? If it wasn't for hunting it would all be one massive monoculture field.
7. Preserve the rural economy and traditions in a way that is more efficient than paying for it thru tax and spend.
8. Meat that tastes better than the supermarket processed stuff.

Well 6 is working with the past and 7 is pretty much saying 'because we did, we should now', as for 8, imo no one should be eating processed crap anyway.

One bullet of sufficient caliber, from a good rifle can easily kill a large Elk. You just need good aim, and to hit it in the right spot.

That part on the other hand... is open to interpretation. Last time I checked, the Werewolf spell doesn't come with a box of .30-06. ------------------- "Do you know what the chain of command is here? If/when the semi trucks stop bringing food to the supermarkets, people are going to wish they didn't shoot up all the wildlife for kicks.

So you admit that hunting fills a valuable role?
Originally by: Kalle Demos 7 is pretty much saying 'because we did, we should now'.
Maybe as far as traditions go, was thinking more of the economic benefits, land is managed, animal populations controlled, vermin controlled, and in some cases tourism boosted, all with minimal cost to the taxpayer. Using rural traditions to get all that for free to the taxpayer seems a good deal.
Originally by: Kalle Demos as for 8, imo no one should be eating processed crap anyway.

I dont think we will ever run out of Chicken, Lamb, Cow and all the other common livestock but lets assume meat was gone, what would people eat?
I doubt it will be vegetables, since meat is so tasty why go green when you can shoot your neighbour and eat him / her ;)
@ Caldari Citizen, I believe the word you are looking for is 'filled'

As a resident of Midwest of US of A, I can tell you there are no local animals that can control deer population, none. No wolves, no bears, no pumas. How to preserve the ecosystem then? Hunting. Controlled, state sponsored, supervised by people with biology degrees.
It aint rocket science people :)

Ohh I get it, so if an animal is overpopulated and spreading like a disease consuming everything, it is best to hunt and reduce the population.

Well, the reason there's not many predators around in the first place is because they were hunted until there were no more. Even Eagles were pretty much wiped out in the US, because so many 'patriots' wanted one on their wall.
Thankfully we have lots hanging around our landfills here in Canada, because they're not birds of prey, but scavengers, and we can always spare some.

I keep mentioning this when it comes to people but people always call me crazy or sick. We've been reintroducing wolves in our areas but Ranchers hate them for obvious reasons.
