I was watching a friend of mine run a level four combat mission from his monitor. Unfortunately he got over his head and attempted to warp away, only to find himself getting scrambled my some frigates. As he tried in vain to keep his ship together and kill these frigates, I was watching the red bars rise and fall as his modules pulsed. He had around one-fifth of his structure left when suddenly his mailbox flashed about getting the insurance pay out. Then I watched everything pause, his pod transpose on top of his ship, the ship explode and yet still retain that one-fifth of structure before disappearing.
So is the game coded to have a ship reach the destruction point no matter what the modules, or pilot's trained skills, might dictate otherwise? That is, the breaking point was breached and the death sequence begins?
I mostly mine or transport goods, so combat missions are not well-known to me. |

It is called lag. The ship was already destroyed, but the graphics didnt catch up. This has always existed in eve. you get the mail before you see your ship go boom.

Lag and the new management of some stuff.
Recently CCP move management of several things to a separate node from the one that is managing the fight. so the separate node got the death message very fast (physically it is near the other node and communication is way faster than through the net), before his PC was getting the latest info on damage and generating the death scene. So the insurance mail was there before him actually seeing the ship explode.

That's not why it's faster. The node that runs all character services is faster because it's under much less load. Hence why you usually receive mail updates and such quicker. ---
