I bought my Noctis at 50 mil, renamed it Chomper II after my now decommissioned Ferox salvager, and I love it.
My Ore Industrial skill is only lvl 3 and I'm still doing lvl 3 missions, but I still made that money back in no time. My tractor beams (I) reach out to 44km at such a low skill, and my salvagers (I) are also more effective. I'd say I salvage missions in half the time now, since I don't really have to move it very much to reach all the wrecks.

IMO Noctis is a little bit expansive for what I do. I am using a Cormorant with 4 tractor beams,, 4 salvagers, 1x AB and cap rechargers. Noctis salvages faster, but my Cormorant wiht rigs and other stuff costs about 10 million. The price of a Noctis with rigs is over 60 million. This makes me a considerable target for an upset missionruner when I am performing ninja salvaging. He can easily take me down in a cruiser or so. He will not give up even his cheapest PVP ship for a 10 million Cormorant, but he could for 60 million Noctis.

Gave the ship a try salvaging in 0.0 Sanctums and Havens. I must say that this ship is bucketloads of better for salvaging than destroyer. The added tractor speed for a start gives very significant time savings when your stuff is further than 20 km and added salvage probability will make you miss less cykles. Have skill at 4 and tractor range is enough to not move at all if I bookmark one of the 'middle' wrecks for later salvage operation.
Ofc I would earn better just blitzin the next anom with my killing speed, but salvcaging over more than year of not bothering with it has some novelity value as well :) BTW I noticed that rats still drop T1 stuff as well - wasnt it supposed to be removed and replaced by meta level stuff ?

A good percentage of the large meta 0 modules from BS wrecks have been converted to scrap metal.
You still get the full range of items from the BC- wrecks and most of the general modules from BS wrecks, so you will not see the large guns and some other massive mineral faucet from missions, but you still get the other stuff (and for some reason the cruise and siege missile launchers aren't considered large modules).

Good to know - I was indeed wondering about all that scrap metal as loot and lack of T1 large guns and smartbombs. Unfortunately I'm in guristas space at the moment and that salvage is not particularly worthwhile. Well at least with all the drake blobs out there that use shield extender rigs it's not tanking at the moment as hard as it could be.

Edited by: Aphrodite Skripalle on 09/12/2010 09:56:45 Technically a rorqual with 200 km tractor range for salvaging sites is kind of unbeatable in 0.0, but who wants to risk a ship like that expensive if you can have nearly same with the noctis. Also a Marauder with his bonus on tractor beams is an expensive high end version of a salvager, still unbeatable because you can kill and salvage simultanously. And Marauders only fitted for salvaging are way to expensive. On the low end a BC or smaller still are not that bad, fast and cheap and will find their places.

Having used the Noctis now for close to a week now, my feelings on it have flip-flopped around a bit due mainly to one critical issue.
Simply put, the Noctis is too big. Like many others, I use an Orca as a small mobile base while I explore the galaxy, and have always packed an Eris Interdictor for my salvaging needs. If I were to replace my Eris with the Noctis, I would only be able to haul the Noctis, a single Cruiser, and a single Frigate. The Noctis is 4.9 times larger than my Eris (Eris: 55,000m3 versus Noctis: 270,000m3). I can package the Noctis and just assemble it on-site, but that prevents me from rigging it out, not to mention it's far less convenient (not to mention a royal pain if there's no station nearby).
It's not to say the Noctis is a bad ship. However I am now questioning if its additional salvaging capabilities are worth me sacrificing my overall flexibility (since I would no-longer be able to haul as many vessels with me). I can salvage pretty good with my Eris afterall.

Edited by: Njana Ti on 10/12/2010 07:31:18 Noctis is awesome.
The time for salvaging missions has been halved at least. Looting up to 3,000 m¦ is perfectly fine. I have a hard time keeping up the looting with the salvaging, with a 5 tractor/3 salvager I combo. Its 10 targets are cool, how nice I trained that up for logis already :).
I don't miss my good old dessi-salvager. Am I bad?
Edit: I don't ninja salvage or steal loot, so the noctis is awesome. And awesome. Skill for ship is @ 3, going for lvl4 for even more awesomeness.

Me too!! Got Multitasking for my guardian. The noctis just took my 10 target virginity and I loved it!!! Targeting up the next 6 things is a real time saver, not loosing any time on the tractor beams.

Confirming Noctis is full of win. Level4 ORE Indy skill is good enough for now.
Protip: 3xCargohold IIs in lows, then put a GSC in your hold. == +900m3 more space, and salvage is nicely grouped in your main cargo, and the rest in the can.
Using Noctis on 2nd account in 0.0 has very little risk and increases efficiency and potential profit significantly. Naming your Noctis "Serentiy" also slightly increases your coolness. |

Noctis is great for salvaging missions ... although to get a decent capacity for all the loot it needs cargo rigs and containers. But if you're running anomalies then you still have to use a destroyer as a lot of the gates won't let a noctis in..

Noctis salvages much better than a destroyer across the board. Only in certain instances like the one Lirinas mentions will a destroyer be better, you might also prefer a destroyer if you are cheap or dont have much ISK to spend.

Edited by: Boomer 666 on 12/12/2010 09:33:11 I purchased the noctis as a replacement ship to my alt's WH exploration ferox. The ferox fit is capable of RR (armor and hull), scanning (with combat probes), arching, hacking, and salvaging. My main complaint that it was a little slow on the salvaging end.
With the noctis, I am able to do everything I was able to do with ferox except for drone replacement, but since I am very close to moving onto a tengu, that issue did not concern me. Plus the extra cargo space would be a definite advantage allowing me to wander a bit further without having to leave to restock ammo or dump loot.
But quickly I came across an issue that I cannot overlook, no third mid slot. Which means that I either have to drop hacking or arching OR not be able to MWD from can to can and forced to warp in and out to each radar/mag can. My decision is simple but I would love to have that extra slot for a MWD.
For that one oversight, I would have to give the noctis an 8/10. Otherwise, I believe that the noctis has great potential as a WH exploration ship and will be a good stepping stone into the orca.

For the Noctis' poor scan resolution just add 2 sensor boosters with scan resolution scripts, problem solved - no real reason to use the meds to tank it unless you're using it to ninja salvage or something.

I haven't used one yet, but it seems to me that a Noctis wouldn't be a preferable choice for ninja salvaging. The tractor beams are pointless and it's a slow moving ship.
Since I haven't used one yet, this is just my assessment from looking at the stats.

Edited by: Lirinas on 12/12/2010 16:39:50 The Noctis makes a poor hacking & archeology vessel since those professions don't play to any of it's strengths, let alone there only being two medium slots on the ship. It'd be better to use a Covert Ops ship for those needs (or whatever ship you're using for scanning).
Although a 3rd medium slot would be nice, likely all I'd fit it with is an extra Sensor Booster (I use 1 Sensor Booster and 1 MWD currently).

I have a salvage alt with me all the time while doing anything out in space.
Destroyer = warp in, look around, group wrecks, mwd around click click click - you missed the wreck, how far is it? 30 km?, baah, do i take this its large? - check market value, curse about lack of capacitor for mwd, lack of pretty much everything to fit a decent salvager to a low skilled industrial / PI alt.
Noctis = warp in, ctrl-click-click-click-click-click-F1-2-3-4-wait 5 sec-F6-7-8-wait 8 sec done, open containers one by one - crtl-a - drag
Please tell me you see a difference worth 40M ISK
I.

I had my doubts about the Noctis, until I got one. It's much easier if you have two accounts and are dual boxing. L4 missioning on one, salvaging with the Noctis on the other. This is the ideal, time saving setup, if possible.
I have a straight forward setup: Highs: 4 x Tractors 4 x Salvagers
Mids: Afterburner Sensor Booster
Lows: 2 x Nanofiber II 1 x Inertia Stab II
Rigs: 3 x Salvage Tackle
I find that I don't need cargo expanders in the lows. At the most, my L4 loot and salvage take up about 90% of cargo space. Haven't had to make two trips so far on any L4 with the Noctis.
Having said that, I typically clear a wreck field in about 5 minutes in a mad, disorganized frenzy that leaves my head spinning. I target the first six wrecks and just go after other wrecks as fast as possible one at a time as previous wrecks disappear. Do you other Noctis owners have a technique in place that's more organized/consistent but still quick? Share your methods! ____________________

I run a bit different.
5x Tractor 3x Salvager II MWD, sensor booster 2x expander 1x signal amp II 3x salvage rigs
Using it in 0.0 anoms, although TBH it's not worth it still isk/h wise as I do ~ 25 mil / tick in bounties. Guristas salvage is relatively worthless and after getting scrap metal in every second wreck instead of worthwhile stuff the loot price per m3 is crappier than it used to be as well. I just like to see the stuff pile up and every once in a blue moon there is something worth something in the mix as well.

i have only one salvage rig on my noctis. My experience is that this is still enough to keep the 3 salvages running faster than the 5 tractors can pull stuff in.
