It is buzzing around the internet that the big press release from NASA coming today is that they have discovered life capable of utilizing arsenic instead of phosphorus like the current classic definition of life on earth entailing life can evolve completely separately in very different environments. Our current definition of life uses the elemental building blocks: CHONP(S), now we have to add CHONP(S,As).
The implications are quite massive if true as it means we have empirical evidence that life can evolve under other conditions and utilize the elements around it. Might need to modify the drake equation now, the odds of discovering new life should be going up radically :)
Exciting stuff!

Edited by: Professor Tarantula on 02/12/2010 15:46:28 Frank Drake already modified his equation to make life more likely with what we've learned since, but i'm sure he wouldn't mind doing it again.
Was really hoping this had something to do with the discovery of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide on Rhea, which is an indication there may be organisms to mediate the change from one to the other, but weird discoveries are just as good. As long as they share them with us.

None really, it's internet speculation based on the press embargo around the release and the researchers field of expertise behind the study.
We shall find out soon enough :)

Edited by: Professor Tarantula on 02/12/2010 16:38:43 Here's a good article summing it all up. For coast to coast listeners this was all dealt with last night, though.
TL;DR: "I'm sad to quell some of the @kottke-induced excitement about possible extraterrestrial life. I've seen the Science paper. It's not that."

http://toxics.usgs.gov/highlights/arsenic_bugs.html http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19826533.600-early-life-could-have-relied-on-arsenic-dna.html That was 5 years ago. So the "big" announcement if it was about the bacteria would be just a confirmation of what they already suspected.
Now if they have found evidence of this happening on another planet/moon. Cool?

This has just been posted on Ars about the phosphorous / arsenic adaptation in bacteria, it's interesting stuff.
Looking forward to finding out what the press release will be about!

"As we pursue our efforts to seek signs of life in the solar system, we have to think more broadly, more diversely and consider life as we do not know it."
Isn't this what they've always done?

While this is pretty cool in its theoretical implications, (being the first hard evidence that life forms actually can substitute chemically similar elements) seeing as the relative cosmic abundance of phosphorus to arsenic is estimated at ~2000/1 it's not like we've just radically expanded our search horizons...

It would help if they didn't hype these up so much. The discovery of Oxygen on Rhea was much bigger news in terms of astrobiology, and was announced like it was no big thing. I mean this news is interesting and all, but kind of presents a more science-fiction-like image of possible alien life.
They really don't hype it up. NASA comes out saying they have an announcement and the internet goes "OMG THEY FOUND ALIUMS GAIS!!!" and then are disappointed when it's an interesting discovery but not that monumental of one.

You really think this news is worthy of a press conference?
They keep arranging these, and say they're about astrobiology, or findings on Mars, knowing full well what people are going to think. . It's been like 5 these so far. And like i said before, finding oxygen on another planet is pretty incredible, yet no press conference for that.

They keep arranging these, and say they're about astrobiology, or 'signifigant findings' on Mars, knowing full well what people are going to think. Then the actual news is the type of thing we get from them with no fanfare at all pretty often.
It's been like 5 of these so far. And like i said before, finding oxygen on another planet is pretty incredible, yet no press conference for that. They really seem to be playing games with us at this point.
Its all about money. NASA will have to face cuts in the next time. So they try to get the most effect get more publicity atm. Obama is not a friend of NASA if i remember right he called it an expensive hobby.
Rhea or Enceladus was really cool but somehow not worth a conference coz it was a joint venture with the ESA. ;-)
