It's not a windscreen, it's some kind of cargo/loading bay, hence the forcefield.

These ships are ****ing huge mind. Nothing comes remotely close to the size and complexity of ships in eve, comparing a modern day battleship to an eve cruiser, which would be a comparable size, is like comparing a piece of floating driftwood to HMS Invincible
The size of an eve cruiser is on par with a contemporary cruiser, and a battleship is the size of a aircraft carrier. Which is pretty big, sure. The capitals are huge though.
According to Wiki: The USS Enterprise is 342m The Yamato was 263m
According to the Shipsize chart: An Apocalypse is 1603m A Hyperion is 1700m A Thorax is 291m An Arbitrator is 327m
so essentially an Arbitrator is a Nimitz class ship. |

Originally by: Emperor Cheney Today, modern warships comparable in size to EVE ships operate with crew sizes smaller than a couple of infantry companies. ( see http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/cg-47-specs.htm). 50 years ago, crew sizes were even larger for a comparable size ship, due to a need to manually load all the guns. 50 years before that, with need for dedicated coal shovelers, ship crews were even bigger. In fact, one can track a progression of smaller crew size per square foot of ship space going back to the dawn of recorded maritime history. On trade ships this crew reduction has been even more dramatic. Massive container ships larger than an in-EVE industrial are effectively run with a score of dedicated crew, mostly consisting of bridge crew.
So given future tech automization removing the need for many jobs, the entire bridge crew (and a lot of command and control) being replaced by the pod, and really not a lot left to be handled. What is there for EVE crews to even do, besides run the engines and do routine maintenance? For all those reasons, despite the established lore, I can't imagine any use for more than a hundred or two people on a capsuleer run battleship, maybe an extra hundred or so on an NPC battleship to replace the command and control functions.
This is pretty much it right here. I'd even go so far as to say that a lot of the crew on a modern ship are redundant. Even a WWII era carrier could probably be sailed around the world with only 10 or so people crewing it. You really just need one guy to steer and another guy to keep the engines running, get a 3rd to bring the other two snacks and maybe take over for bio breaks. Then they can all take 8 hour shifts and everyone should be happy. And with 8 hour shifts, someone can always pull a double shift to get things done for non-day to day circumstances (e.g. storms, sailing into port, navigating a busy section of the ocean, etc.). You could probably even do it with 4 people and 12 hour shifts, but that would get quite brutal if it lasted for any extended length of time.
Taking the carrier into battle would be a whole different matter. You'd need people to fly the planes, people to maintain the planes, people to do repairs, people to man the radar and communications, etc. And then all the people to support the crew with cooking, medical, laundry, etc. You also need backup crew for when you take casualties (or even to fill in for someone for a day if that someone gets the flu or drops a hammer on their toe).

Well to be fair this is someone who laundrues a lot of ISK. Dian'h just has her priorities straight.
To give you an Idea of the Apoc's sive it has been detirmined by measuring the 4m pod in comparison that it is 1600m in length. That is about 4.5 times the length not counting hight and width.
The Apoc and a real life Carrier are not in the same ball park.

Yeah ok, well whatever it is, you can see Inside it and I think it would be fun if CCP animated some stuff inside like , crew working or, driving huge loaders, or operating machinery, as I said , doesnt have to be intricate, but basic animation would be cool I think, and would stir the imagination and make it hungary for more lore and more Eve novels ;) Removed. ok here is what you do. Get a shed, like, with windows on every side. Then play eve inside said shed, and get some friends to stand outside the windows and roleplay being in your ship.
using their mobiles they will watch your hp and what your doing and react accordingly. So when your under attack they will start running around the shed. When you win a fight they will cheer!
and when your bleeding into structure they will be banging on the glass windows of your immortality, screaming for their lives, crying for loved ones, and trampling each other to escape through the few functioning escape pods. As the end nears, like zombies they will attempting to break into your pod room, surrounding you as you gaze apon them with pity (shortly followed by disregard), knowing you will soon wake up, another ship ready for your command.
Then like, take your friends out for a bear or something. :P

it makes more sense for them to not have crews IMO, that would explain why capsuleer ships are better then NPC ships, no crew quarters, cafeterias, or recreation. just more space for shield generators, power plants ect.

Edited by: Ohanka on 03/12/2010 13:05:33 to all those who are saying eve Battleships are comparable in size to modern day aircraft carriers, sorry, but this is simply false.
a Modern Day US Navy Aircraft Carrier (namely the Nimitz Class) is around 330 Meters long, and has about 6000 Crewmen.
an Eve Battleship on Average is about a Kilometer long, the exceptions are the Caldari Scorpion and Raven, these ships have about 5000-7000 Crew.
however EvE Cruisers are comparable in size to a modern day aircraft carrier, and have about 500-850 Crew.
these ships are not overcrewed.
(there was a chart on the internet with exact measurements of the eve ships in length, but i can't find it.)

Pretty much. Battleships have about the same mass as a modern carrier, even though they're ten times larger ù cruisers, while the same size, are off in terms of mass by the same factor of 10×, but hey, scifi space materials and all that. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Magical Tritanium. Put it in space and it's super hard, super malleable and super light. You can do whatever you want with it. Unless you want to enter a planetary atmosphere ofc, then you are better off building a ship out of chocolate because at room temperature you have a blob of goo.

I could have sworn that in previous database dumps, there was a ship attribute called 'crew size' or 'max crew'. Looking at Eveiverse - Apocolypse it shows a 'Max Passengers: 999' attribute under 'Other'. I think that used to be the crew attribute. Every ship has a Max Passenger attribute iirc, even the Shuttle with a 'Max Passengers: 1'

I would speculate that the number of ships lost to lack of coffee is much quite high.

Yes, and it's even stated in the first EVE Novel (Empyrean Age) I've read.

Caldari battleships are on average much wider than their counterparts and, according to the backstory, also make greater use of advanced tech (eg miniaturisation). ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Let's first tackle the bizarre notion that our ships acquire zero wear and tear, there is never any system malfunctions, resale values are never a factor, and damage done in combat is linear as opposed to modular or functional in effect.
I REALLY shake my fist and give the finger to zero fuel consumption though.
Perhaps the new station roles in Incarna would be enhanced by the needs of ship upkeep. And for those players who dislike the time sink of station activity, they could hire mortal specialist crews to reduce in-station maintenance at a premium. --------------------------------------- Completely ignore any whining that is not toilet orientated. |

So, the way I see it, the capsuleer makes decisions, the crew makes it happen.
I know it's not Star Trek but, think about how much time it takes for Data to gather info, and relay it to slow ol' Capt. Picard, who then has to listen to Dianna spew some psycho bs, then listen to Riker's self-righteous speech, then listen to Worf's battlecry, then hear Geordi's explanation on why or why they can not do the chosen action of Picard, then they have to press the buttons to make the action happen, which then filters down to the peon's control boards in their respective areas of operations, who then go about their task of making said action happen.
Now, imagine just Data running the bridge. Problem solved.
