FYP.
On the bright side it only requires science 3 and you can then use tractor beams too.

You even start with Science III so Cybernetics I is perhaps a few minutes ..
I'd say a few fitting skills would be handy.

Good advice indeed.
The core certificates are a good guideline for new players when it comes to fitting skills. Likely one of the few times where the certificate system comes in handy. ;)

Like previous posters said ^^. Cybernetics V, Learning V, Advanced Learning V, or you midas well just quit because your wasting your time. Then you need BS V, T2 Large Guns, at LEAST or you shouldn't bother leaving station because your worthless. Then when you leave station you're worthless because you're in Empire and you are a citizen of ancient Rome and you can't come to 0.0 without 20m SP or PVP. Go mine noob.

Unfortunately a true answer to this question will still, as it has for a little while now, depend on the person's specific (or, more complicated, general), long-term goals, which must first be generated in order to determine which skills will fit best during particular neural remaps over the course of at least 2 years, as a result of weighing the relative pros and cons of expediency and efficiency.
This will continue to generate confusion among the stupid, with the advantage that there will be 11 less skills to addle the poor brains of this population. Although, as has been the case for a little while now, these people will likely just ask one of their stupid fellows how they should remap, and the friend will say something somebody else told them, and then these people will happily go on training whatever they want, or perhaps the above recommendations, from that point forward.

Sure. Train up Learning skills to 5/5 and get +5 implants. You can either station spin for the next 3 months or do low level missions in your frig till the training is done. Training anything else is a waste of your time and inefficient.
Oh, wait. After Dec 14...
What was that other response... what was it... it was inefficient and silly... Oh yeah... Do whatever you want and have fun.
Anyway. I guess it will be train up cybernetics to 4 and complete the core certificates (wow, now they seem kinda useful). Well that and have fun.
Can't wait till Dec 14. Heck I might make a new account and check out the rookie chat and see how things go.

It depends entirely on what the person wants to do. However, I think the best start someone can get before branching off to do something they want to do would be this: I would start off by training for a Drake right off the bat for mission running, Kestrel (level 1 easy), AML Caracal (level 2 easy), Drake (level 3 easy). Once you have a semi-decent drake and level 3 missions, you have a decent enough income to decide to do what you want. You can quickly get to 8-9mil an hour with even 2-3 week old skills in a Drake when you reach level 3 missions. The skillbooks and Drake and Caracal can be funded by the time you reach the required standings to be able to run those missions.
From there, you can decide whether or not you want to PvP, carry on the PVE route to level 4s, decide to trade, or (heaven forbid) decide to mine. a few hours of Level 3 missions provide a decent enough income for you to be able to afford the start up of trading, or invention, or most things which you are able to do with your skills at this point.

THIS Everyonetroll who is complaining about learning skills going away should read just this.
Get all support to level 3 some to level 4 put your ship of choice at 4 and weapons at 4
good start imo

this is why when people say you can't catch up they are full of ****.
A new player could train all of that in the time it would take me to get battleships to level 5 from 4.
you might not catch up in SP, but what does that really mean? Total number of skills trained is where it's important. the final 5% bonus takes about 80% of the training time.

Yup, too many people are too focused on SP as a number instead of the important thing: skill levels and the benefits they give you.
These are probably the same people that grind for things to show off and make them feel superior in other games.
SP is just a number. It, in and of itself, does nothing for you.

Just tell them to do the tutorial missions then choose a profession and train in that direction. Should make things easier for them to choose now anyway without having to worry about that mini-game the 'learning skills'.

this but skills like drones V (+1 drone woop big deal) unlock skills like drone interfacting (+20% drone dmg/lvl omg i just ****ed) then again you have skills like combat drone proficiency (I think it was prof.) that give +5% dmg for a 5 day train.

Hmm seems like the new answers will be. Your core skills, electronics, engineering, missile launcher Yadda yadda, then caldari frigate 4, caldari cruiser 4, battlecruiser 4, and missile skills because 2011 will be the year of the drake until ccp nerfs it making it nearly useless.
