Edit: Well, to elaborate, these are the skills that you want to get maxed, (maybe not right out of the gate, but eventually) although level 3/4 to begin with is more than adequate.

Think about you want to do, look for a ship that does it, and then go for it. If you want Pew Pew, mixing support/ship/weapon is good. And dont think Dradnaught or even Fleet BS, at that will take for ever to be really good at it, begin small. lvl 4 missions, small scale PvP, whatever.
Thats what I do. Will take a month or two, but is better than aiming at stuff that takes years and I would get frustrated on the way. After reaching that, one can either just skill support, or aim for the next ship...

When I first started flying ewar, I looked at the training plan for a Widow and I was: 
And now I've got my support skills maxed out and I checked the other day and I'm only 30 days or so away from it (if I still wanted to go down that path).
